Testicular ultrasound results

Hi all, found a lump a few weeks ago and went to an out of hours gp via nhs111 (moved at the start of Covid and hadn’t registered). 

 

Anyway he said he could feel swelling and although urine was clear it could be an infection so take antibiotics for a week and if no improvement, return to GP. Registered in the week and saw the GP who redid urine and said not an infection, had a feel and said he wanted to refer me for an urgent ultrasound. Just over a week later and I had my ultrasound today. The problem is the man who did the scan had an amazing poker face and gave no information. He said one of the GPs would be in touch within 2 days and if i didn’t hear by Thursday to call. I’m now anxious and not sure if this is the normal speed for getting results? Any advice would be fab!

    Hi RSW2020.  Welcome to the forum.

    And welcome to "scanxiety" - something we all suffer from here.  I've got a bladder cystoscopy on Friday and I can feel my own nerves building up, but at least I'll get to know right away.

    Most of the technicians who run MRI/CT etc scanners are trained to get the best possible images, but not to interpret them because they're not doctors.  This means that you can never get any information out of them, and it simply isn't worth asking.

    When it comes to ultrasound, it varies on the training of the operator.  Sometimes you can get immediate feedback (as I did when I got a testicular ultrasound 2 years ago), but sometime they tell you nothing.

    In my area, GPs have access to all hospital scan results through their computer system as soon as the results are typed up.  I've had CT results from my GP before I've heard from the hospital (sometimes weeks before), and my GP will also print out the full report for me to keep and study.

    My suggestion is that you should phone your GP reception some time after 9.30 today (this will be after the early morning rush for appointments is over) and ask whether the result is in and can you hear it.  If your surgery has a special results line then you should contact that. 

    Quite possibly the GP has seen the report and written a comment on it, and you should be able to hear that comment.  You can then take it from there.  Best of luck.

    Thanks for this. It’s a bit odd in my area, the ultrasound was referred via the CCG to another GP practice who ran the Ultrasound at my GP (mind blown :silly:)

     

    Rang up this afternoon and the report was only sent across today and she said it has to be fed back by a dr to me. I asked when and explained the timeframe and just said look I’m very anxious and the sonographer gave nothing away so my anxiety is high. She said ok one minute and after a period of silence said no one of the drs will be in touch. So I’m hoping I hear tomorrow but if not I’ll call on Friday. 

     

    Im expecting it will be something harmless but when I had my last scan I was told at the time just an epidydimal cyst. Therefore this time I knew it felt different but was hoping I’d have something after the ultrasound but because he didn’t say anything it’s just made me worry.

     

    Rant over, just want to know what all my symptoms are being caused by....

    So I am speaking to my GP this evening, got a phone call this morning to say I'm on my GPs list for this evening. I'm really nervous but whatever happens happens now I suppose.
