Awaiting potential biopsy

Hi all, just wanted to let out some thoughts and also get a little but of advice if that's okay!

I've had this mole on my back since I was a teenager (now 26) and over the last couple of years it's been changing but I was stupid and didn't want to do anything about it. Just before the start of lockdown my boyfriend said it looked dodgy and I should get it checked, but due to lockdown I didn't want to bother anyone with it since I spoke to the doctor about something else and she was really rude about how busy they were.

Now we are (hopefully) coming out the other side of medical delays due to lockdown etc on Thursday I sent a request to the doctor with a picture and just asked them what I should do. They called me at 8pm and told me to come in the next day (Friday). At my appointment the doctor looked and said it was so different to anything else on my body that she was referring me within 2 weeks and they might do a biopsy so be prepared to be at the appointment a long time.

I got the call today for an appointment at the hospital on Friday. The lady on the phone said it was only a 15 minute appointment though so I'm guessing I won't have the biopsy this week? It all seems really fast and should I be worried? Or do you think they will make me wait on Friday?

The only thing I'm worried about now is that I waited so long that if it comes back as bad news did I bring this on myself?

  • Hello PrincessPeach and welcome to the forum.

Try not to be too hard on yourself if you can. The good thing is you're getting it checked now.

Hopefully some of our members who have been through this referral process will share their experiences with you soon but in the meantime you can read up on what may happen at your appointment just here.

I hope this helps and all goes well on Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

Thanks so much for your reply. I am trying not to be hard on myself but I just feel so stupid. I hope to hear from others who have been through this soon, as my appointment is tomorrow morning and I'm really nervous :(

Thank you for the link it's very helpful x

  • I'm glad the link has been helpful :)

If you like, you're welcome to have a chat with one of our nurses about this on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and insightful so do give them a call if you feel it will help.

    Good luck for tomorrow PrincessPeach.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph

So I had my appointment today at 9.30 and she said it didn't worry her but she was going to do a biopsy anyway to be sure. She also fully checked my whole body for any other moles which no one had warned me of! This was a bit of a shock. Then I had a lot of waiting and had the procedure at around 12ish. It took about 40 minutes and I had 4 stitches. The only thing that bothers me is she said the results will take 4-6 weeks which seems like a really long time?! I know she said it doesn't worry her but I'm still not happy to have this hanging over my head for a month and a half :(

Would still really love to hear anyone else's experiences if you are reading this x

  • It's now been 5 weeks since my biopsy and I had really hoped the results would be back by now but I guess I have to wait the full 6 weeks!

Does anyone know how the results will come? Is it by post or phone?
