Stool sample test not always 100%

Hi

As having bowel cancer in the past, twice, I read lots of posts from people having symptoms.

Lots of people mention the stool test.......

All I can say is listen to your own body. If you have a negative result from your stool sample test and continue with other symptoms please insist on further investigation.

Both times I had cancer my tests came back ok!

The second time I was seeing dark blood and mucus in my poo, I collected what I thought was a good bit to test but still it came back fine. And obviously wasn't.

On the other hand I have met other bowel cancer sufferers who had the screening at 60, and with no symptoms have had a positive result and a colonoscopy found they had cancer.

  • Hi can ask what you mean when you say dark blood? I can see what looks like maroon/red in parts of my stool, these pieces of stools look like they’ve been in my colon for a day or two as I go once everyday. I’m absolutely freaking out, and I can’t even get a colonoscopy as I’m pregnant and they want to wait till baby is born. I do have visable hemorrhoids but I highly doubt they could cause blood that looks dried up in the stool. The rest of my stool is fine, apart from these pieces.

  • Hi

The first time I had no blood.

The second all maroon coloured. saw streaks of blood mucus in it and this is what I sent in the sample tube. Still came back ok!

  • Hi was all you stool maroon coloured? Or did you have maroon mucas blood along with maroon stool? And how many times where you going to the loo? I can’t belive your fit test came back negative, when blood is what they look for .

Was the whole stool maroon ?

More was there maroon blood on the stool? Sorry for asking questions I’m just so scared.

  • So second time...

When I got up on a morning, needed to go straight away, no shape to it just all maroon in colour like thick mush! (sorry, sounds disgusting but best way to describe). When looking closely red streaks.

    When is your baby due?

    Have you any more symptoms?

Please try to stay calm for your baby, I know it is easier said than done but worst case is cancer but there are a number of reasons that can cause blood in stools.

Can't your midwife ease your worrying? Try to think positive, anxiety makes everything worse.

  • So was it visable blood ? Or was the poop just maroon colour if you get what I mean. Sometimes you can see red mucas on stools was it like that? Or just plain old maroon stool? Did you have any other symptoms? And how long did you get the maroon stools for ?

Well with me ill have tiny tiny blobs of what looks like maroon stool and the rest of my stool looks normal I think. No other symptoms. But I don’t get if it’s not serious why is it still happening. :( my baby is due end of December, just stressing out so much.

  • Hi Sabr.

Sometimes red coloured food, such as tomato skin remnants, can appear in your poo, looking like blood spots.

  • Hey [@telemando]‍ I 100 percent know it’s not food as had a fit test like two months ago and put the stick where my stool looked maroon and it came back positive. I also just found out I’m anemic I don’t know if that’s due to being pregnant or blood in stool. :( ever so worried.

  • The whole lot marroon coloured.

    Sometimes blood/mucus streaks in too.

The first time I had bowel cancer the only symptoms were bad indigestion and a sharp pain above my belly button. ( you will probably get indigestion with pregnancy though so don't let that scare you).

The second time I was diagnosed I sort of knew before it was confirmed. Totally different symptoms for some reason. All the common ones... blood/marroon stools, no shape to it, just thick liquid. Feeling bloated. Abdomen pain. No weight loss though.

It is a positive sign that you have no other symptoms, things would be getting worse week by week I would think if it was serious. I'm no doctor but I think it is a good sign that most of your stool is normal colour.

Try to relax for your babies sake and yours. In a few months your baby will be here and you can have the investigations. Enjoy your baby, don't let this worry spoil it. I'm sure they'll be a less serious explanation for your symptom or I think by now you would be having more signs and believe me you would know.

    xx

  • [@Ineedabreak]‍  Hey Thank for replying back to me, you calmed me down a little. When you had bowel cancer where you going the loo a lot more often ? And was it always maroon mush?

I really hope you are better now ?

At times I put it to the back of my head and just enjoy the day or enjoy being pregnant, which comes with its own sets of hardship too, but every time I go loo, I’m back to feeling scared again. And now I’m anemic so more scared.

  • Hi

Glad you calmed down a little.

I can't really remember how may times, just that it was always ready when I got up in the morning and no shape to it. My normal was once a day, maybe I went twice then although worrying makes you go more too.

Focus on the positives and don't google because that would make the healthiest person think they had cancer. You google a headache it puts a brain tumor in your mind!

Has the midwife said anything about you being anaemic?

    Enjoy your weekend
