10-month swollen left supraclavicular lymph node (Hodgkins?)

Hi there, first time posting here. I'm a 27yo man. Wondering if any of you can shed some light as I feel paralyzed with worry. Here it is.

Oct '19 - I had a bacterial infection for which I took penicillin for a week. It helped but seemed like it wasn't enough.

Nov to Jan - I was basically on and off being ill, taking paracetamol and coughing but no fever.

Early Nov - That's when I first noticed a had a swelling perched on my left collar bone that has to this day not gone down.

Jan to Feb - About of month and a half of being healthy though that supraclavicular lymph node stayed swollen.

Mid March - Fell ill practically overnight with mild to mediocre shortness of breath and extreme heaviness in my chest. I thought it was Covid and talked to 111 about 5 times but was never tested and had no fever and almost no cough at all though I did have sore throat.

May - My shortness of breath (which came and went on episodes followed by sharp chest pain) got worse and I was prescribed doxycycline which helped almost immediately, but then I relapsed and was again prescribed more doxycycline. All this was done over the phone and I hadn't had any contact with a doctor nor been tested for Covid.

June to July - I was more or less healthy, no shortness of breath or pain but my lymph node was still large as always.

Late July - Finally met with a doctor, specifically for that lymph node. By then I also had a swelling around the lower end of my sternum - don't remember when I first got that but it's rather large (maybe an inch in diameter) and I mismissed it as Xiphoid process. I never felt it as being at any point small - rather, it seemed that a bone piece that had previously been hidden was now visibly protruding. The doctor arranged for a blood test on that day (the results of which were all normal) and said that the lymph node swelling warrants an ultrasound check. Interestingly my blood test included a check for Covid antibodies and it turned out I had none. Of course I may have had them earlier since as far as I understand they only linger for a month or two.

The situation now is that I cough occasionally, wake up sweaty sometimes, and sometimes have mild shortness of breath, especially at night, along with some pressure on my chest. I have not had any fever this whole year. No apparent weight loss either. My lymph node has sometimes been very swollen to the point where you can see it in the mirror, but then it would return back to its normal swollen size over the course of a day. It feels immobile and hard to the touch. It turned out that the doctor had forgotten to book me for an ultrasound *rolling eyes* and so I'll be having a phone appointment with him on Sept 9th. Usually I am very healthy but these past 10 months I've repeatedly been up and down which annoyingly overlaps with the pandemic. My worry is that these infections might be due to a Hodgkin's lymphoma because it's been 10 months and even when I've been healthy in that time period my lymph node has remained swollen.

Any thoughts? Thanks for reading this long-winded post...

  • No worries. I hope you find the threads about the covid vaccine/supraclavicular node. How are you feeling?

I actually ended up going to the GP Out of Hrs last night in bad pain in my abdomen. The GP on duty examined my collar bone and told me that she couldn't feel a lymph node. I can still feel something but it feels as if it has gone down. She also felt my abdomen extensively and couldn't feel the thing I felt as a 'mass'. She, however, said it wouldn't be possible for her to feel a tumour on the pancreas, as it is too deep.

I've been trying to feel positive today but the left sided pain under my ribs and the pressure feeling is there again tonight.

  • Hiya,

Oh no sounds like you had a rough night. It's good that you got checked out but you probably need to get seen for some proper scans to get to the route of the problem and for some reassurance. I've had appointments like that too and it's frustrating, as there's only really so much they can tell you by feeling your stomach. It's good you got checked out though and that you think the lymph nodes seem to be going down.

I'm feeling a bit calmer than I was last night now, but still in pain and discomfort under my ribs and the nodes are still big. I got a face to face dr's appointment this morning and they checked out the lymph nodes. They could feel them and want me to wait and see if they are still there after Christmas before doing any bloods or taking it any further. She's booked me for a chest x-ray later this week to rule that area out. I'm glad to be getting more tests to get to the source of the problem but its more below my ribs that I get the pain so I'm not expecting the x ray to show anything.

try to stay positive and keep yourself busy. It's so easy to get in cycles of worry and I do it myself all the time, i think the anxiety is worse than the physical pain sometimes....we just need to take it one step at a time and keep going through the process with the doctors to find out what's causing our problems.

  • How are you getting on Keen85?

  • Hiya, thanks for getting in touch!
I saw the doctor a few weeks back and she said to wait till early Jan and if I still have swollen nodes to go back. They're still there so I'll probably give them a call next week for another appointmentment. How are you getting on?

  • Hi Keen85,

Ok, so GP in the new year if they're still there. Are they still there or are you trying to leave them for a bit to hopefully go down? How are you feeling about everything?

I'm pretty much the same as I was except my daytime pain has subsided a little. I think that my anxiety was really ramping up this pain. Night times are more or less the same - I feel this constant lump/pressure/marble under my left rib when I lay on my left side. Sometimes when I turn over to my right, I get a surge of pain. I feel like I'm only sleeping at a lighter level and very aware of aches and flashes of pain in my upper abdomen over night.

My node (if that's what it is) is still there and feels smaller and harder.

The abdominal popping/moving/sensation of a mass being there is still happening.

I'm in a bit of a tricky situation with regards to my next appointment. The GP wanted to refer me to a general surgeon, as I had an emergency bowel op over 6 years ago and feels that there potentially could be a link with all of this despite this only starting 12-18 months ago. We agreed that I would do this through BUPA but I've since realised (after hearing the GP letter) that BUPA will probably consider this a preexisting condition so I'm a bit stuck as to what to do now. I've got a call booked in with my GP on the 6th to discuss and I think I'm going to ask them to refer me through BUPA on the basis on the node, as that would be seen as entirely separate. I know that with Christmas it's unlikely that I would be seen much quicker anyway even without the admin/BUPA blip.

I'm definitely trying to take it day by day and keep positive. Since my ultrasound, I've tried to enjoy Christmas and have tried not to worry about what can't be changed. It's so hard though! x

  • Hi SunshineH,

Sorry for the slow reply! I hope you're doing ok and have made some progress. Have you had any more appointments or got anything lined up soon? It sounds like it's definitely worth investigating if there's a link with your past emergency bowel op, might not be the cause but certainly sounds possible. Good to hear you tried to stay positive and enjoy Christmas. I did the same and had a lovely big gathering with family, which helped keep it from my mind for a while. How are you feeling about things at the minute?

Ive had to wait ages to see my GP as it's so hard getting appointments at the minute, so I've tried to stay occupied and keep my m8 d off it. I finally saw him a few days ago. The nodes are still raised and hard, either the same or slightly larger I'm not sure. The pain under my ribs has been bugging me a lot lately but I'm trying my best to keep busy and not over worry about it. I've had a chest x ray which was clear, blood tests tomorrow and an ultrasound on my neck and collarbone area in 2 weeks now.

I'm actually feeling was more anxious now I have something booked in, and I'm struggling to just leave the nodes along and stop prodding them every two minutes!! Sometimes having a date to countdown to where you're being seen really ramps up my worry, even though it's positive progress. At least I'll know more in a couple of weeks though and it's hopefully a step to some answers.

I hope you've made some progress too x

  • Hi Guys,

Ive discovered swelling above my collarbone again today.  It was something that seemed to show itself after my Covid Booster but then I think went down.  Now it's up again today.  Feels quite large, not v deep but across my shoulder blade.  I've experienced a HUGE amount of stress these past 5-7 years inc a type of cancer (placenta) in 2015.  Worried now.

  • Hi Daphn3,

Has your lump gone down? I noticed mine on the left collarbone after my 3rd covid jab at the beginning of December and it hasn't gone down at all! It feels hard but moves around a lot when pressed, it doesn't hurt at all. I have a blood test on Tuesday and an ultrasound booked for the end of the month...

Have you had any tests done yet?

    Charlotte

  • Hi Charlotte,

Mine seems to have gone down.  I haven't had any tests.  I think it was Covid jab related.

I hope your tests go well.

    thanks,
