10-month swollen left supraclavicular lymph node (Hodgkins?)

Hi there, first time posting here. I'm a 27yo man. Wondering if any of you can shed some light as I feel paralyzed with worry. Here it is.

Oct '19 - I had a bacterial infection for which I took penicillin for a week. It helped but seemed like it wasn't enough.

Nov to Jan - I was basically on and off being ill, taking paracetamol and coughing but no fever.

Early Nov - That's when I first noticed a had a swelling perched on my left collar bone that has to this day not gone down.

Jan to Feb - About of month and a half of being healthy though that supraclavicular lymph node stayed swollen.

Mid March - Fell ill practically overnight with mild to mediocre shortness of breath and extreme heaviness in my chest. I thought it was Covid and talked to 111 about 5 times but was never tested and had no fever and almost no cough at all though I did have sore throat.

May - My shortness of breath (which came and went on episodes followed by sharp chest pain) got worse and I was prescribed doxycycline which helped almost immediately, but then I relapsed and was again prescribed more doxycycline. All this was done over the phone and I hadn't had any contact with a doctor nor been tested for Covid.

June to July - I was more or less healthy, no shortness of breath or pain but my lymph node was still large as always.

Late July - Finally met with a doctor, specifically for that lymph node. By then I also had a swelling around the lower end of my sternum - don't remember when I first got that but it's rather large (maybe an inch in diameter) and I mismissed it as Xiphoid process. I never felt it as being at any point small - rather, it seemed that a bone piece that had previously been hidden was now visibly protruding. The doctor arranged for a blood test on that day (the results of which were all normal) and said that the lymph node swelling warrants an ultrasound check. Interestingly my blood test included a check for Covid antibodies and it turned out I had none. Of course I may have had them earlier since as far as I understand they only linger for a month or two.

The situation now is that I cough occasionally, wake up sweaty sometimes, and sometimes have mild shortness of breath, especially at night, along with some pressure on my chest. I have not had any fever this whole year. No apparent weight loss either. My lymph node has sometimes been very swollen to the point where you can see it in the mirror, but then it would return back to its normal swollen size over the course of a day. It feels immobile and hard to the touch. It turned out that the doctor had forgotten to book me for an ultrasound *rolling eyes* and so I'll be having a phone appointment with him on Sept 9th. Usually I am very healthy but these past 10 months I've repeatedly been up and down which annoyingly overlaps with the pandemic. My worry is that these infections might be due to a Hodgkin's lymphoma because it's been 10 months and even when I've been healthy in that time period my lymph node has remained swollen.

Any thoughts? Thanks for reading this long-winded post...

  • Thanks. It's just good to know I'm not some sad sod wallowing in self pity. This morning we went to the supermarket and I had a total panic attack.... I couldn't cope with xmas things, other people's joy. I literally went to pieces, shaking, crying... it was awful.... I'm sure it's a natural response

  • Yep so hard to to use Google and think the worse. Mmmhh chocolate cake. I'm on antibiotics and just about coping with toast. Enjoy the rest of your evening. Here if you need a chat. Although I'm lacking in advice . Keep us posted on how you are doing. Stay strong

  • Jeezo that reply was for Essexs89. Ooops. X

  • Not good hunni. But it's not surprising either. Absolutely not self pity. You are only human and it's a huge shock. Natural response indeed. Tomorrow's a new day. Stay strong

  • Chocolate cake sounds amazing! Send some over please.

I'm so sorry about your news! Have you given MacMillian a call? The support they offer is invaluable.

The way you feel definitely feels like a natural response, I can't comprehend how you feel right now.

    sending a Big virtual hug.

  • Had GP appointment today at 11.40 because of a lump I found on Tuesday near my collar bone. They said its a swollen lymph node but wanted me to try antibiotics first and have bloods done before sending me for a scan. Got home and rang for bloods appointment but couldn't get me in for 2 weeks. then had a voicemail from gp asking me to go back for further examination with her and another gp. They did bloods, breast, tummy and rectal examination and they referring me for a chest xray and ultra sound scans and I've to take the antibiotics.

    Getting very nervous

  • Hi everyone,

I've been searching the internet for answers and came across this post. I see it's not been active for a while but thought I'd reply anyway and see if I get any responses!

    my story so far....

ive been feeling ill for about a year, lots of abdomen issues and terrible fatigue, horrible feeling in my throat and chest all the time. One enlarged tonsil removed 6 months ago. I've had endoscopes, blood tests and all sorts all finding nothing. I feel rubbish all the time but just hitting brick walls actually getting any answers. This weekend I've just realised I have two very enlarged lymph nodes by my left collar bone. I'm terrified to say the least and can't calm down tonight after reading what it can mean to have these particular lymph nodes enlarged. Im going to call my GP first thing tomorrow, it's been really hard to get any appointments at the moment so I'm really hoping they can see me quickly!

From looking online it appears these left collarbone nodes are usually cancerous if enlarged...is this correct, can they be caused by other things too?? I know nobody here can give me any definite answers, I'm just really freaking out and not sure what to do with myself tonight.

    thank you

  • Keen85,

I'm sorry that you are feeling very worried. I am also struggling a lot after finding a supraclavicular node on my collar bone. I've had an abdominal worry (popping/moving sensation) over the last year to 18 months and now I think I can feel a mass and I'm getting a lot of pain. I'm absolutely freaking out too and filled with anxiety.

The good thing is that you have had some investigations already e.g. an endoscope.

Another thing is that lots of people are getting enlarged supraclavicular nodes after the covid vaccination. There are a number of threads, one with hundreds of replies.

  • Thanks so much for your reply! Im really sorry to hear you're struggling too. The anxiety that comes with these health problems can be so bad, I've found it completely crippling at times this year and it's definitely got a hold of me tonight. That's interesting about the Covid vaccine, I'll take a look at those threads.

I was convinced something would come up on my colonoscopy / endoscopy so it was a good surprise that they were all clear. And it's actually reassuring as you see the camera images yourself while it's being done so you find out there and then. Have you have your lymph node looked at by a doctor yet? And and you due to have any investigations in your abdomen? Could you have a hiatus hernia? That was something they suspected I had and it sounds similar. I hope you get some further investigations done soon to find out what going on and hopefully put your mind at ease.
