10-month swollen left supraclavicular lymph node (Hodgkins?)

Hi there, first time posting here. I'm a 27yo man. Wondering if any of you can shed some light as I feel paralyzed with worry. Here it is.

Oct '19 - I had a bacterial infection for which I took penicillin for a week. It helped but seemed like it wasn't enough.

Nov to Jan - I was basically on and off being ill, taking paracetamol and coughing but no fever.

Early Nov - That's when I first noticed a had a swelling perched on my left collar bone that has to this day not gone down.

Jan to Feb - About of month and a half of being healthy though that supraclavicular lymph node stayed swollen.

Mid March - Fell ill practically overnight with mild to mediocre shortness of breath and extreme heaviness in my chest. I thought it was Covid and talked to 111 about 5 times but was never tested and had no fever and almost no cough at all though I did have sore throat.

May - My shortness of breath (which came and went on episodes followed by sharp chest pain) got worse and I was prescribed doxycycline which helped almost immediately, but then I relapsed and was again prescribed more doxycycline. All this was done over the phone and I hadn't had any contact with a doctor nor been tested for Covid.

June to July - I was more or less healthy, no shortness of breath or pain but my lymph node was still large as always.

Late July - Finally met with a doctor, specifically for that lymph node. By then I also had a swelling around the lower end of my sternum - don't remember when I first got that but it's rather large (maybe an inch in diameter) and I mismissed it as Xiphoid process. I never felt it as being at any point small - rather, it seemed that a bone piece that had previously been hidden was now visibly protruding. The doctor arranged for a blood test on that day (the results of which were all normal) and said that the lymph node swelling warrants an ultrasound check. Interestingly my blood test included a check for Covid antibodies and it turned out I had none. Of course I may have had them earlier since as far as I understand they only linger for a month or two.

The situation now is that I cough occasionally, wake up sweaty sometimes, and sometimes have mild shortness of breath, especially at night, along with some pressure on my chest. I have not had any fever this whole year. No apparent weight loss either. My lymph node has sometimes been very swollen to the point where you can see it in the mirror, but then it would return back to its normal swollen size over the course of a day. It feels immobile and hard to the touch. It turned out that the doctor had forgotten to book me for an ultrasound *rolling eyes* and so I'll be having a phone appointment with him on Sept 9th. Usually I am very healthy but these past 10 months I've repeatedly been up and down which annoyingly overlaps with the pandemic. My worry is that these infections might be due to a Hodgkin's lymphoma because it's been 10 months and even when I've been healthy in that time period my lymph node has remained swollen.

Any thoughts? Thanks for reading this long-winded post...

  • Hi Kirsty

I'm 42 male and have found a tic tac sized lump a couple of months ago above left collar bone after having caught covid on holiday. My last covid jab was November 2021 and I'm triple jabbed.

Went to docs she felt all over and said it moves and is under 1cm but is referring me for a blood test and a scan so I'm now waiting. The anxiety is crippling.

I don't have any other symptoms of cancer other than a tightening of the chest rarely although I've always had this sporadically over the years as I'm overweight. I'm type 2 diabetic.

The scary thing is when I google isolated supraclavicular lymph node left collar bone it says if you're over 40 it's 90% chance it's cancer. I feel I would know if I had advanced stage 4 cancer but I guess I just have to wait for the scan etc now.

  • Hi Kirsty,

any updates on your situation? I'm very similar and trying to do some research

  • Hi wardende,

how did it go getting your scans etc, it's such a daunting thing!

  • Hi everyone,

Just to add my experience here I'm hope that someone somewhere in the future may benefit.

I have had intermittent super clavicle (lymph-node?) swelling since April 2020. I have been given ultrasound, and offered x-ray, but declined, and also seen a handful of doctors. The last one downplayed my concerns, said "I think you're getting ahead of yourself ", when I suggested it could be food related and then told me to forget about it and get on with my life (!). From this point, I decided to ignore that and started excluding the main foods which can trigger symptoms. And found out that the swelling in my collarbone region was down to a gluten intolerance (NCGS).

I'm not saying by any means that you shouldn't go ahead and ask your GP to investigate. But if you find from the doctor that all tests are proving inconclusive. And you're banging your head against the wall , please consider that it might be food related.

Best wishes to you all xx

  • Hi Bezza

I've just had my ultrasound at the hospital with the radiologist. He had a good look around and assured me that no lymphnodes look enlarged and declared everything normal. I said that I would like a biopsy and he said there's no need as no nodes are over 10mm and all look the right shape etc. I had to wait nearly 5 months for this appointment but now I guess I have some reassurance.

The lymphnode is still there and hasn't grown. I guess I just have to ignore it now. I have no symptoms of what would probably be stage 4 cancer if it was a secondary spread so I'll trust what the radiologist said and try to forget about it.

  • Hello!

Hope you don't mind me asking but ive also been experiencing intermittent swelling on my collarbone and can feel lymph nodes underneath which swelled after my first covid jab in March 2021 i had a Ultrasound scan and they said was reactive and could possibly stick around. When yours swelled did you get any other symptoms with it? Mine doesn't hurt loads but every now and then it gets like a dull ache? It can literally swell in the morning then go down again then come back again,  It doesn't hurt to press on it though and is more of a spongy like texture. Its been like it 2 years now but i still worry the doctors have missed something more sinister like lymphoma. Its so exhausting overthinking and getting dismissed by doctors! But your gluten theory is interesting as ive wondered in the pass if my body has been reacting to gluten and even dairy!

  • Hi, did anything ever come of this for you? I’ve come across this thread because I’ve got a node swollen on my right collarbone as well as a lot swollen under the right side of my jaw which have been for a long long time now. I had a blood test which came back fine but with finding this one on my collarbone I’m now working myself up into a frenzy again
