worrying blood test

Following breathlessness and a slight cough I was referred to A + E with suspected blood clot on lung, thankfully no clot was found. A ct scan revealed that fibrosis on left lung shown on previous ct scan was showing some changes. Also a d dimer blood test which is used in diagnosing blood clots showed a very high level. Found out later that this test is also highly indicative of an underlying or undiagnosed cancer. The test is classed as non specific and can be raised in a number of other conditions, none of which apply to me.

I've been advised to return for further ct scan in 3 months but have no further appointments or investigations meantime. I am living in a constant state of dread and fear and can't sleep.

I would be very grateful if anyone has had any similar experience or advice.  Many thanks.

  • Hello Eilish

I'm sorry tohear that you've had some health concerns recently and that the investigations have left you in a state of limbo and feeling more anoaxious about things.

As you mention the D dimer blood test is used to look for a number of different conditions and I can understand why in addition to the changes that the CT picked up you're feeling worried about things.

I wonder if you'd find it helpful to speak to one of our team of nurses? I'm sure that they will be able to offer some support and advice. If you'd like to speak to them, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that your next CT scan brings some reassurance.

    Best wishes,
