Coughing up blood!

Hi people,

So I've been coughing little bits of blood on and off for 2 years now. it mostly happens in the morning and my chest feels v restricted and tight. When I cough it looks like a little vein (maybe a clot) I've had an x-ray which came back all clear but it still continues to happen. I'm quite worried. Has anyone else experienced this and if so has it gone away

(I use to smoke but not consistently but when I did it was quite heavy) I haven't smoked for a few years now

  • Hi Corrine96.  Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

My understanding is that a chest X-ray is very good for differentiating between a healthy chest and a chest with problems.  Since your X-ray was clear then it's unlikely to be anything too serious.

However, that doesn't solve your problem.

Since you're still having problems, you should go back to your GP. If it's been a year or more since the X-ray it might be worth asking the doctor for a repeat.  The new film can then be compared with the previous film to see if anything has changed.

Other forum members may come up with other suggestions.

  • Hi

Thanks very much for your reply :) Its only been a couple of months since the x-ray so I doubt anything has changed. I'll be ringing the surgery first thing tomorrow

  • Hi Corrine96, my husband has lung cancer and doesn't cough up blood, it's stage four so incurable.  An x Ray would show a shadow on the lung so it looks as though you may have problems with your coughing.  So a good Idea to see the GP again.  Good luck, Carol

  • Thanks for the reply Carol :) I'm sorry about your husband! hope he is coping alright. The GP was thinking that it might be because I'm coughing hard but its not from a huge cough just a tickle. I will keep this forum updated
