Dr called - need another biopsy

I had a steroactic breast biopsy last week - it was awful.  It took them 3 attempts to get a sample of the calcification and then they inserted the titanium clip.  All in all I was in mammogram clamp for about an hour, maybe longer.  I am very bruised but thankfully the pain has eased.  The  breast doctor called yesterday afternoon with the results of the biopsy - a papillary lesion - and with news that I now need another biopsy taken to get a larger sample.  I didn't take in anything else she said as I was so stuck in the "need another sample".

I now await another appointment and a letter explaining what they have found.  I am dreading it, is a second larger volume biopsy normally required?  Any bruise and pain reducing tips?

  • Hello Lee_77,

Oh poor you needing to have another biopsy whilst you are still very bruised from the first one. I hope you won't have to wait too long now to get this new appointment and that this second biopsy goes well. It might be worth asking them when they are doing the biopsy whether they have any tips to reduce the pain and bruising you experienced last time.

Our nurses may also have some helpful advice for you on this. Feel free to ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you will hear from our forum members who have had a similar kind of biopsy before.

Fingers crossed it all goes well for you!

    Best wishes,

  • Sorry to hear this. It sounds similar to me. I had the same kind of biopsy because they found calcification on the breast near the ducts after a mamogram done because of a lump I felt. The lump is cysts but they were concerned about the calcification. Just hoping it's from the cysts. I was lucky in that they removed everything they needed first time but I have a condition called adrenal insufficiency and I ended up having and adrenal crisis after the procedure. That wasn't pleasant. Anyway I get my results on 26th as they wanted me back on 19tj but I'm away so now going the day after I get back. So nervous.

Keep me posted as to what happens with you.

    Hugs xx

  • Not too long to wait for your results but waiting is about the worst part for me.

I called hospital this week as I haven't heard anything since the doctor called me.  My biopsy won't be until early September as clinic has a backlog because of COVID-19.  So for now I am trying to keep busy while letting my very bruised breast heal
