Pain after endometrial biopsy

Good morning, I had a transvaginal scan last week, and as it showed a thickened womb lining and fibroids, the consultant did an endometrial biopsy at the same time. That was 10 days ago, and although the bleeding stopped after a few days, I have a lot of pain in my vagina, sharp pains like sandpaper, and I can't sit down. I am post menopausal, not on HRT and have not been sexually active for 6 years so I am wondering if the pain may be due to vaginal atrophy? Did anyone else have pain for a week or so after a biopsy? How long did it take to subside? Thank you :)

  • What did they say the healing time is and what is your pain like? Mine feels angry like being scratched up and my cervix is red

  • i had a scan last Thursday and saw consultant who took biopsy so painful ! i feel bloated and have some cramping 5 days later ! I'm waiting for hysteroscopy and a coil inserted she said i could have local anaesthetic and gas and air I'm so worried x

  • So pleased to find this thread as has been said not much information about prolonged pain elsewhere on the internet.

I had my biopsies and a polyp removed 8 days ago (06/06/24). I telephoned the day before as I have chronic pain, a difficult to find cervix, and other conditions and was told it was a very adjustable couch so not to worry. On the day I took my Longtec MST to give me additional pain cover. I think they must have swapped rooms as the couch was just the standard type, and the consultant struggled to find my cervix. When he did there was a polyp that needed removing in addition to taking the biopsies, unfortunately there wasn't the correct tool in that room and the nurse had to go and find one. I was laid with my legs akimbo waiting for her return and that was painful enough on it's own, my husband could see my legs shaking by the time she was back.

The biopsies themselves I found very painful, but I'd expected that and was pleased I'd upped my painkillers. I only bled/spotted for 3-4 days and the pain was settling but yesterday - day 7 the cramping is back with a vengeance, no new bleeding or discharge though so I don't think there's an infection there.

I was putting it down to my other conditions until I found this thread. I have to visit family today but if I'm home early enough I may phone the unit for reassurance as I found it very distressing when the pain hit last night.

  • Sorry to hear of your pain. I’m afraid I can’t offer much comfort though! I had my hysteroscopy 23/4 under GA ( thank goodness)  they removed a polyp that I didn’t know I had as hadn’t show on ultrasound. I had pain for 7 weeks, it’s just about gone now mainly I think because I paid for a private course of acupuncture treatment I arranged myself. I had no infection but was on  a combination of Tramadol , ibuprofen and paracetamol (8-10 doses a day in all) to keep the pain manageable. Doctors didn’t seem to have an answer, one told me it was in my head ( a male doctor) . I was told to reduce Tramadol after a couple of weeks but no alternative given so had to do something myself. Had a follow up USS on 3/6 after nagging doctors & I have an appt with consultant 20/6. I don’t think they’ll have much to say as I’m now better. I don’t know if I’ll get an answer to why so much pain. I’m 65 so well past menopause so I guess things don’t stretch so well and wondering if they were more forceful as I had a GA so couldn’t complain! They’re not going to admit to that though!

Good luck! As I said OK now thanks to my own actions and £200!

  • Ps USS on 3/6 was all fine she said, nothing wrong at all & endometrium down to 1mm from 6mm in Feb

  • Thanks for your replies. Glad to hear all is well for you now, I wouldn't be surprised if some of your pain was due to you being under GA as you say.

I have always had fibroids so thinking a lot of my issues with a bulky lining is down to that but will have to wait for my results to be sure.  Pain is quite bad at the moment but thank goodness for heat pads and wheat bags!!
