Pain after endometrial biopsy

Good morning, I had a transvaginal scan last week, and as it showed a thickened womb lining and fibroids, the consultant did an endometrial biopsy at the same time. That was 10 days ago, and although the bleeding stopped after a few days, I have a lot of pain in my vagina, sharp pains like sandpaper, and I can't sit down. I am post menopausal, not on HRT and have not been sexually active for 6 years so I am wondering if the pain may be due to vaginal atrophy? Did anyone else have pain for a week or so after a biopsy? How long did it take to subside? Thank you :)

  • Hi, I've just read your post and I am having similar issues.  I had biopsy done last week and like you, I bled lightly for a couple of days. I'm now feeling really sore and raw inside and my stomach doesn't feel right.  How did things work out for you???

  • Hello Mallie, the good news is that the pain eventually went away but it took a lot longer than I expected, 4 weeks. The information I was given said that it can be a painful procedure but recovery is just a day or so. I think mine was a lot longer as I am post menopausal and havent had children so the consultant had some difficulty getting the sample. He had to use a clamp on my cervix in order to pass the tube through into my womb so that left me raw and I had a bloated stomach for a few weeks. I'm still using a ring to take pressure off when I'm in the car but it's so, so much better. I am also using Balanc Activ Menopause Gel which is soothing. Next time I will ask if they can prescribe vaginal estrogen a week or so before my procedures as I read this helps to moisture the vagina. So I think it's best to contact your clinic and let them know whay symptoms you're having and they will advise what's best to do. I'm sure it will get better soon, take care.

  • I had the same treatment done 7 weeks ago and I am still in a lot of pain, the doctors keep giving me pain killers and on scan I now have fluid around my Fallopian tube.. but they tell me it's not caused by the biopsy,, I am not so sure as I was fine before I had it and have had pain ever since and it's agony at times, I have had two weeks of antibiotics with no improvement and all blood tests have come back normal but the pain is unbearable at times.. my mum had ovarian cancer and my sister had her ovaries removed due to pain and my Auntie had hers removed but none of the family know why and she is no longer her to tell us

  • Hi their skyblue37 I had a endometrial biopsy on the 20/01/2021 the pain was excruciating I have never felt pain like it.

no anaesthetic given i did take pain relief sn hour prior to  having the procedure after the procedure I also had a marina coil fitted.

Leaflet I had prior to procedure said the procedure was simular to having a pap test a little discomfort.

I could barely walk so glad my husband was with me I wouldn't of made it home alone.

I arrived home went to bed its only been a day  im still very sore.

why wasnt I given a general anaesthetic.

I sympathise with all you ladies Im feeling worried at min apparently can tske up to 4/6 weeks before the results come back.

    fingers crossed.

I am still in pain and have had another scan and more blood tests and they can't find anything wrong but they must be something they did to me that day that's not showing up.. my results were normal fingers crossed you you

  • I had exactly the same done on Tuesday. Hysteroscope, biopsy and Minera coil. It was so painful and really shook me up. Still feeling rough today with abdominal pain and several weeks of waiting for result  . I sympathise x

  • I had a hysterocopy with an endometrial biopsy, multiple endometrial polyps removed and a cervical biopsy last week.  I had a general, but there were too many polys to remove in the end.  Consultant told me on the day that my smear had mild changes so that's why they did the cervix biospy too.  I'm still bleeding really heavily, very sore and uncomfortable.  Also stressed because waiting for all these biopsy results.  I also had a 24mm womb lining and had stopped bleeding for 4 months and then bled continuously for 2 months, only norethisterone stopped it for a couple of weeks. Really sympathise with anyone who is also going through this at the moment.  Finding it so difficult having to go to hospital alone due to Covid.  I am usually a positive person, but this has beat me this week.  I can't even be honest with my family and tell them that I am really worried sick. I'm nearly 52.

  • Hi I'm new here. I had a hysteroscopy in February this year. Lots of polyps were removed. But I never stopped bleeding so I had another ultrasound last Friday and my womb lining was as thick as it had been in January.  So this Monday I had a pipelle biopsy and a cervical biopsy too.  I am now awaiting results. My stomach is swollen and looks lopsided on the right has this happened to anyone else?

  • I am just reading all of this and freaking out! I had a Hysteroscope, removal of Polyps, biopsies and Minera coil fitted last week. They told me a couple of days and I will be back to normal. What a joke. Everyone who has posted on here is my situation. I have a swollen stomach, pain and still bleeding. It feels like they have got a metal scraper and whirled it round inside my womb.

  • I had a hysteroscopy on the 05.05.21 under general anesthetic as I have cervical stenosis to remove a polyp and take endometrial samples. My CA125 is a bit raised at 59. The op itself was fine and the nhs staff fabulous. Felt fine that day - a small amount of bleeding and cramping. Since then bleeding has increased and is now quite heavy and the pain is getting ridiculous and it's now almost a week later.  Recovery in a 'couple of days' is a joke - it doesn't seem thats realistic for most people.

  • For those of you who have had a Mirena Coil put in, and are in pain after a week or so, ask for the position of the coil to be checked.

I have Endometrial Hyperplasia and a coil was fitted in 2013. I was told it had been removed in 2018 but had numerous issues. They recently found the coil was inside me - out of position. I am certain that the post menopausal bleeding that I have had was due to the displaced coil. It was causing discomfort and bleeding when I exercised (rowing machine).

  • I had a Endometrial biopsy taken yesterday, very painful when the cells were taken, but bearable just!! Felt extreamly sick afterwards for several hours.

Today feel like I been kicked by a horse in my down below region, and finding it very uncomfortable to sit down.

Just hoping it eases in a day or to x x x

  • I had a hysteroscopy with a few biopsies on Monday (13/9/21). I was "ok" Monday and Tuesday so went back to my normal activities yesterday (a lot of driving) which is what the after care information indicated. I hadn't been bleeding, but am now in awful pain, bleeding and was in bed all day! I'm going to see how it goes tomorrow, but may call the outpatients team for advice

  • I can really understand what you are going through. I had my hysteroscopy and removal of fibroids plus biopsys last week and still feel very uncomfortable. My thickness is 11.3 postmenopausal. I'm 53. Like yourself worried but can't talk with family. Hope you feel better soon. Here to talk if needed.

  • A huge thank you to everyone who have shared their experience.  It means alot to know you're not alone and to learn from others.  I wouldn't have known what to expect...or what to question or find out about if it wasn't for these posts. I was told I need to have annual biopsies after already undergoing monthly, then quarterly and half yearly biopsies over the last 3 years. Also had a mirena coil/IUD fitted 3 years ago.

Regular biopsies can be quite an experience of pain and cramps. And waiting for the results difficult too.

To everyone reading these posts in the future....Don't be afraid to call 111 for advice...don't suffer in silence.  Heartfelt prayers for you all. We will get through this.
