Really worried

Hello, I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.  I have recently had the results of a routine smear which took three attempts to get as my cervix was apparently 'hiding'. The results came back yesterday and say I have 'low grade dyskaryosis' and also tested positive for HPV.  I have received an appointment to attend for a colposcopy in five and a half weeks time.

whats completely freaking me out is that the appointment says:

We have booked the following outpatient appointment for you:

Who: Gynaecological Oncology

When: 10/08/20

Where: Gynaecology Outpatients

any idea why the word oncology is in the letter?!  Apologies as I'm probably overthinking but don't have anybody in real life I can ask.

thank you.

  • Hi Stargazer100,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be concerning however try not to worry too much at this stage - this is common practice and you can read more about the process via this information on our website. There are also other threads on this forum which help to explain a little more - for example this one which has received replies from our nurses.

If you'd like to talk anything through with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hey, I completely understand your worry. When I had my first smear test my colposcopy appt came through before my results and my results came back with high grade results so as you can imagine I was completely freaked out. I'd also had ongoing issues in that region so was completely convinced I had cervical cancer. When I went to the appt it was no where near as bad as what I had built it up to be. Yes I had some dodgy cells but these would take years to develope I to anything sinister if they evan did. They tested the cells and removed them and put me on a yearly check up. My next appt showed some signs again so had to have another biopsy which confirmed all cells had been removed. My next one was completely clear and I'm not back to the normal fequesncy of checks. I hope my experience puts your mind at rest as I get how scary this is x
