Bloating, Bleeding from Bum with clots

Hello All,

I'm 35 and a Mum to 2 beautiful girls aged 11 and 3. I guess I first had rectal bleeding around 18 months ago however my Dad was at the time dying in hospital of Cancer so put it down to stress.

Had another episode in Jan this year with severe bloating. I went to A&E and they said I had a compacted upper colon. Lower bowel was completely clear which confused them. As a result I was to be referred to see the Gastro team. Then Covid happened......

I since became pregnant and am currently 19 weeks pregnant. The past 3 weeks the bleeding is back. I feel like I can go to the toilet but all I get is blood and mucus. Feel unwell after too. Dr did blood test and stool test. Results came back the my Calprotectin level was very high at 1640 when normal range is 0-50.

Due to levels alone the Dr referred me as a suspected Cancer patient. To say that conserned me is an understatement but trying to stay positive.

Big complication is I'm pregnant and I'm worried. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms and what was the outcome for you?

  • I bet you can’t wait to get it over and one with. Yes I’m pregnant which makes things a little harder for me I guessing regarding a camera test. I’ve had these symptoms well before I got pregnant which worries me more. I Already know the fit test is going to be positive/high I could see the dark blood.

What are your symptoms if you don’t mind me asking?

  • Of course not,

I've had bright red bleeding on and off since my DD was born . Recently it's gotten worse. I do have an external pile and skin tag so Dr thinks bleeding is down to this. I have lost weight though without trying and had a change in bowel habits. Lots of loose stools and going more often. My hair is falling out but not sure if that's stress or related. Dr has run blood tests ... All clear and done stool sample checking for IBD I think ... Also clear. Sharp stabbing pain in abdomen on my left hand side...no lumps can be felt upon tummy examination.  Lower back pain. Had a referral to a gastroenterologist who wants to rule anything suspicious out so colonoscopy booked in for just over a weeks time.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that! But also remember it can be some thing not as scary like IBD or even polyps which don't always turn into anything sinister. I know myself it's so much easier said than done but try not to let your mind go to the bad place it could make you so poorly going down that road.

    Always here to talk xx

  • [@Lil_C]‍ Let us know how you get on, hoping it’s nothing but an irritated hemorrhoid, as they cause the bright blood. It’s a good thing that your stool sample was fine too. Positive thoughts!

[@Frankii]‍ I’m hoping it’s nothing but a bad hemorrhoid but I guess what worries me Ian that the blood is really dark. I hate thinking about going to the loo something I thought would never happen

  • hi

sorry its been a crazy few weeks so havent been in touch. how are you any news??

i've finally had a appointment date from the hospital a telephone consultation for next week thank god! Also my GP has finally agreed i need a FIT test so waiting for that through the post.

  • [@Frankii]‍ Hi hope you’re well, at work you still getting blood in your stools? Have your symptoms calmed down a little since last time?

  • Hi [@Sabr]‍

    How are you?

Still the same still need medication to go toilet but the dose is varying a little more. The blood had stopped but its come back this week and my stomachs gone haywire.... But I'm trying to stay positive now i have my hospital appt finally..... Nervous as hell though.

  • Hi [@Sabr]‍

    How are you?

Just an update had my telephone consultation.... I have an appt for colonoscopy on the 3rd of December... He said because of my age he isn't thinking colon cancer but who knows?

Got some more bloods to be taken on the 30th including a calcium blood test the hospital requested. My GP also requested a FIT test to be done finally however i cant do it as ive seen blood myself and the consultant said not to as ill get a positive regardless.

    So basically still no answers.

  • Hi [@Frankii]‍ so glad you finally managed to get Colonoscopy. The blood you see is sometimes right? And only on top of the stool? Hoping it’s just hemorrhoids.

Im still stuck in limbo and nothing can be done till February as im due end of December and then I need to heal from birth before they do anything.

  • Hi [@Sabr]

The blood was sometimes yes although the past week or so it's been everyday  it's on the outside and in the toilet bowl and when i wipe now.... I'm praying it's just a reopened anal tear or hemorrhoids like you suggested. I've come off my movicol as it was just making me rush to the toilet 10x a day so that may be why?

Is there nothing they can do for you before February? I completely understand you need to heal but surely they can do something for you to put your mind at ease?
