Bloating, Bleeding from Bum with clots

Hello All,

I'm 35 and a Mum to 2 beautiful girls aged 11 and 3. I guess I first had rectal bleeding around 18 months ago however my Dad was at the time dying in hospital of Cancer so put it down to stress.

Had another episode in Jan this year with severe bloating. I went to A&E and they said I had a compacted upper colon. Lower bowel was completely clear which confused them. As a result I was to be referred to see the Gastro team. Then Covid happened......

I since became pregnant and am currently 19 weeks pregnant. The past 3 weeks the bleeding is back. I feel like I can go to the toilet but all I get is blood and mucus. Feel unwell after too. Dr did blood test and stool test. Results came back the my Calprotectin level was very high at 1640 when normal range is 0-50.

Due to levels alone the Dr referred me as a suspected Cancer patient. To say that conserned me is an understatement but trying to stay positive.

Big complication is I'm pregnant and I'm worried. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms and what was the outcome for you?

  • Hi

Glad i was able to make you feel a little bit more reassured!

Writing everything down is a good idea then youve got it all in front of you timelined and stuff so like you say you don't miss anything.

I'm so pleased for you that youve managed to at least be able to speak to someone and get the ball rolling.

I'm guessing thats what a colorectal surgeon will do for me but who knows? Just the receptionist at my GP's said not to worry.

No indication on wait times the woman who phoned up on my behalf was not best impressed but she said she will keep pushing for me. I've got to the point i'm less worried about what it could be and more just want answers so i can start any treatment before it becomes ( hopefully not) untreatable. Just a waiting game, although i had thought of looking at private also but thats really expensive isnt it £180 just for consultation!

Yes definitely let me know how sunday goes! it's my birthday that day so i have a goo feeling for you.

  • Hi,

I'm going through a similar thing. Hope all is well with you all? Did anyone find out what's wrong?

    Simon

  • Not great, I’m having what looks like dark red slimy mucas with my stool. I’m beyond petrified. Everytime I see the dark mucas blood it sends me to a dark place. I need to do a fit test now.

  • Happy Birthday! Hope you are having a wonderful day!

Thought I would drop you a message to let you know how my telephone appointment with the gastroenterologist went. He was pleased I had listed and timelined all my symptoms and said in his opinion cancer is unlikely. He thinks the bleeding is from the piles but with the other symptoms of weight loss and a change in bowel movements he wants to rule anything suspicious out. He has ordered a colonoscopy and put it through as urgent so I get seen quickly. He told me the results from my stool sample as well which was completely normal although I have no idea what they were looking for with that. Have you had any more luck or heard anything further?

  • Hi!

I've only just seen this but thankyou!

I'm so pleased for you that tests turned out normal! Fingers crossed for the colonoscopy as well.... good they are doing it quickly for you!

Yes slight progress on mine my appointment has been triaged which means theyve actually looked at it now so I may get an appointment soon hopefully....

  • Oh I'm so sorry to hear that....you always let your mind go to the worst place don't you

  • That's great news I'm so glad they have looked at it got you. You may find the ball starts rolling very quickly now.

I had a phone call from the hospital yesterday and have a telephone pre assessment booked in for Thursday morning. I also have a date for the procedure now and it's less than two weeks away. Very nervous about the actual procedure now having got this far but at least it will hopefully rule things out and help ease my anxieties a bit if it's nothing more than piles.

  • Well I got a positive fit test and now afraid beyond belief. Will have to wait and see what the consultant decides to do.

  • Hey Lil C do keep updated on how it all goes! Really hoping it’s just piles causing your symptoms.

Hey Ed I know tmi but how does the blood loo when you bleed? My one seems to be a very deep red shade a little  mucasy, but I can’t be sure if the blood is so dark because the stool gets mixed in. So scared.

  • Of course I will let you know how I get on. My telephone pre assessment was very informative and I'm not looking forward to the bowel prep at all but at least I will know one way or the other soon.

Sorry to hear you are so scared . Please try not to worry although I know it's hard isn't it. You are pregnant aren't you ? Have they checked for piles? Pregnancy definitely makes them worse and the positive FIT test would pick up blood if you are bleeding from piles or a tear (fissure) . I know it's impossible but do try not to worry . The consultant will have more answers for you soon I'm sure .
