Ultrasound for neck lumps tomorrow - scared

Hi everyone. I just wanted to say what's going on with me and hopefully see if someone can help with some information.

My background is I'm 34 and about 6 weeks ago felt a hard pea sized lump in the left side of my neck towards the back. The lump did not move when I pressed it. It felt deep in the neck and I forgot about it until I felt it again about three weeks later. That day I prodded it a lot, it felt hard and rubbery and then it swelled up. Now there are two lumps that if I tilt my head to one side can be felt easily. Both feel rubbery and hard and don't move. I had a phone consultation with the GP who asked about other symptoms but I don't have any. I then went in for the GP to examine my neck and she said she would refer me to an ultrasound and that is tomorrow. I am very anxious and scared and wondered if anyone can share their experiences with me. The GP said the nodes were fixed but small, she said less than 1cm. Can an ultrasound diagnose malignancy? I have a young child and I'm beside myself. Thank you for anyone reading.

  • Oh bless you!

it it helps I have heaps of lumps in my throat! I'm still having them looked at 6 months later but most doctors have said it's fine - my dentist has referred me now lol! Ultrasound can show if it looks suspicious or not - don't freak! Ask them to check all over and don't leave without asking everything you want! Mum of an 18 month old so I fee your worries z

  • Thank you for replying I have been beside myself since I found it and waiting for these appointments has been a very anxious time. I'm just so worried they'll say it looks suspicious and then I know I'll spiral into a panic although I'm trying to prepare myself for each situation.

i will update after my appointment as I know I have found it helpful reading other people's experiences.

  • Hi, I know it's easy to say but don't chew yourself about the ultrasound.  I had one last week to check on an enlarged lymph node in my neck,  while there the doc took a biopsy and honestly I never felt a thing. I was only in 5 minutes.   If they haven't mentioned a biopsy then I doubt they'll do one.

I'm sure you'll be fine, and later today you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about!

    Take care.   Col.
