Worried about lung cancer/lymphoma

Hiya im a 35 year old male and i would never thought I would have to write something like this, we all feel indestructible and I'm certainly feeling my mortality at the moment.

So over 2 months ago I started getting a pain on my right side only in my shoulder chest and side ribs for about 2 weeks I thought I just slept funny or something, spoke to the doctor and went to see him and he said that he thinks it's muscular.

Within a few days my right lymph node behind my jaw was swollen. This time alarm bells started ringing as I have a history of cancer in my family in the 30s and all these symptoms were on the same side.

I spoke to my doctor again and he said don't worry. Waited 4 more weeks spoke to him a 3rd time he said don't worry it's fine.

In this time I went to see a chiropractor to see if that would help and it didn't.

We are now over 2 and a half months in and  I'm getting pain in both my arm pits chest and ribs with both jaw glands solid as a rock and both fairly large, I had to push my GP hard for a blood test after the 5th time talking to them and no examination at all!

I ended up seeing a private doctor and he did say that I need to push for an urgent ultrasound because my family history and both nodes feel really hard but didn't wanna discuss the chest/shoulder/rib pain as he said without a CT he would be guessing.

So I'm now at a point where I just don't trust my GP and i could be waiting another 4 to 6 weeks for scans with the covid situation so went to a private cancer clinic who also said that lymphoma needs ruling out (1600 pound for ultrasounds, CT and blood tests, but I don't care it's quicker and they can give faster referrals if there are issues)

So my main worry is ... I know as people we should not self diagnose and im not trying to do that but I am 90% sure it's cancer, right now my biggest concern is if it's lung cancer or lymphoma...

I'm still staying optimistic that it is something trivial but with pain all on the same side of my body and symptoms randomly appearing, which feels like it's spreading around I'm bricking it right now. Along with serious night sweats that my missus has noticed and fatigue (that could be down to not working right now)!!

I'll be speaking to the private clinic Monday to book in my tests for this week while waiting for my bloods from my GP.

Anyway thanks for listening.

  • Hi Ashley,

i understand your worry! I'm 24 and worried about lymphoma too! Please don't scare yourself so much (I have tortured myself since December with this lymphoma fear). You are doing all the right things and should have some answers soon. It could be an infection or it could be infection and muscle related, it could all be completely unrelated. Lymphoma also, is a very treatable cancer if it were to be something like this. Also the wait for GP shouldn't be 6 weeks with potential cancer suspicions you should be put on the two week referral which I have been put on through my dentist and have had my first consultation and MRI booked for next week!

it's also been very hot and a very scary stressful time which can trigger similar symptoms! I know it's scary, I promise you I know I'm looking at my 17 month old and my fiancé is a firefighter so I get nervous he can bring in coronavirus all the time which scares me giving my symptoms, but my favourite quote it's proper cringe but so true "worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but it doesn't get you anywhere" I'm the biggest worrier going and suffer awful health anxiety due to past complications but breathe and watch your fav film with your mrs and enjoy every day! Right now you don't know what is causing this, but soon you will know. It could be nothing or it could be something, but equally anything could happen to any of us at any time. Only worry when and if you need to!

you are doing all the right steps! Stay away from google (trust me I've had countless nights of tears and no sleep) and take it day by day!

i hope it all goes well for you!

    ill check in for updates!

    becky :)

  • Thanks and Good luck with your tests. Yeah I'm not using doctor Google at all anymore I'm over that bit! I'm more annoyed at my GP for not even giving me the time of day for an examination and I've had to go private.

Scary with kids right! I've got a 5 year old.

Let me know how your MRI goes. I'll be speaking to a private clinic Monday so should have ultrasound/CT and Bloods all completed by end of week also.

Good luck and let me know how it goes

  • Thank you, I'm just hoping I can get to the root of it now. It's just not a time to be waiting and watching worrying about potentially having the dreaded c word when the world has gone quackers!

    Although it's terrifying anytime really!!

I wish I could say I was surprised, I was given the same treatment from December. I recently moved to this new gp after moving from London where it was super busy to a gp with one doctor and she too didn't even check my lumps in my throat, in my armpit she checked it incorrectly and then made me feel bad for wanting it scanned lol.. she spent 20 seconds with me and told me its because I am skinny.. lol I'm average and my lymph nodes are all on one side and I don't think I can be skinny just one side lol! I'm glad you are getting it looked at! I would but we recently became home owners and on one wage (I'm a student) and don't want to dip into remaining savings esp when my fiancé thinks it will all be fine lol!! But I would if I could!! Odds are in your favour but it's best to be safe, like you say especially with our babies needing us!! (17 months/ 5 years still our babies lol) I'm lucky my dentist referred me!!

thanks again and good luck to you too!!

please keep me posted! I'm sure all will be well! Here if you have any questions/rants etc :)

  • So a little update. My GP called me today and told me I had a few abnormalities in my blood and wants me to go in tomorrow, little worrying but I'm sure it's nothing.

I've also booked my private tests which start tomorrow of CT, ultrasound and blood tests and will have the results back by Monday. Fingers crossed I'll have a more clear answer next week

  • Hi Ashley!

    Glad to hear from you

Thanks for keeping me updated! It could be something like iron levels, I had a call back from my doctors because I needed to boost my vitamin D. Usually they just make you redo them when they off too.

Oh wow that's amazing super quick! Looks like you'll have your answers very soon and the horrible worry and wait will be over! I'm hoping mine isn't too long! Although I'm sticking with NHS.

I had a bit of a fright today because my son hes 17 months I can also easily feel his collarbone lymph node which has put me on a wobble! My partner is so blasé about it and not bothered thinks I'm overreacting but I'm pretty scared and upset although It is small like mine.

Let me know how it all goes.

And I am loving the new calm approach!!!

    Becky :)

  • Hi [@Becksxxx][@Ashley12]‍ just wondering how you got on with your results?
I've been going through similar, woke up one day with pain and tightness in my neck and shoulder then noticed my gland was up, was fobbed off twice by one GP without even an examination due to COVID, saying I'm 'too young' (I'm 26)

My health anxiety has been through the roof with COVID as well, too scared to go out and see anyone in case I had Lymphoma and didn't know about it!
Thankfully I asked to see another GP who has been amazing, sent me for blood work which has all come back normal. I also paid for a private MRI which has interestingly come back with arthritis of the shoulder which may be the root of the pain! No mention of lymph nodes or masses despite my doctor saying the are raised. Of course my anxiety is telling me maybe they were looking at the wrong thing and missed something but I have to have faith  my doctor said he thinks I could have an underlying ENT problem like Glue Ear causing me infections affecting my nodes. So I'm optimistic it's all one big coincidence at once that pointed to Lymphoma!
Have either of you got your results yet? Hoping it's good news for both of you!!

  • Hiya,

I had an ultrasound back in feb and now had an mri of head and neck which shows nothing sinister. Doesn't really help with the fact I can feel the lymph nodes (although ent doctor said one of the "nodes" is actually a wing to my hyoid bone and not  lymph node at all - I don't feel reassured but hey ho) he also said that on my left side the gland I have kind of sits and hangs lower in the left side for some reason but it all looked healthy.. I forgot to show him another lymph node I was worried about that sits on the left side of my throat that I believe is sitting on a vein. Sometimes feels huge but I'm not sure if that's because it's moving along the vein, but I emailed his assistant who said she'll ask but he's not in until Wednesday. However, he was happy to give me the all clear for my head and neck but it's still painful, in some of the nodes and uncomfortable but I feel like there's nothing that will be done to fixed this. I'm still absolutely worried about lymphoma, especially with coronavirus like you say it's that worry of going out with current climate with the worry of whether we have lymphoma underlying not knowing about it. However, not sure what more I can actually do.

I hope you get your answers soon x
