Thought I felt a lump earlier but can't find it now

I am a 30 year old man. I normally check my testicles at least once a month when in the shower, although not normally that thoroughly. Just the front and sides. I was checking more thoroughty today and thought I could feel a small bump on the lower part of my left testicle, more towards the bottom on the inside. Admittedly, I do not know that much about the testicular structure but this made me panic for a short time. I googled about it and found that there is a part of the scrotum called the epididymis. Based on diagram, this seems to cover a large portion of the rear part of the testicle, including the bottom and top. I checked again a bit later and coudn't find anything, then checked a bit later and felt a bit of a bump, but I couldn't be sure. However, I have checked again a few times this evening and I can't seem to find anything. Considering it is not on the front or outside part of my left testicle, I am wondering if I am possibly confusing it with the epididymis which may have got in the way of my earlier check-up. I am also wondering how I should proceed with this? Seeing as I haven't been able to locate it again, I was thinking of just checking each day for the next week and if I find it again, I should try and see my GP. Obviously that might be quite difficult at the moment but better to be safe than sorry! However, I think everyone will have some form of health anxiety at the moment and I am wondering it I may just be overreacting? I feel that if it was a serious issue, then the lump would be a lot more noticeable, but I've probably examined the area about 20 times since early afternoon and haven't been able to find anything of note.

  • Just want to add to this that I have not been experiencing any other symptoms. I have had issues with anxiety this year after moving to London and starting a new job but aside from some bloating and stomach discomfort at the start of lockdown which lasted for about 10 days and has now subsided completely, I've felt a bit constipated the past few days, something which I am sure will also go away.

    Hi Robo,

Welcome to our forum. The best way to check yourself is possibly to soap yourself well in the shower and, then gently feel your testicles to see if you can find this small lump again.  Do this daily for a week and see if you find your lump again. Try not to keep examining yourself so often, or you are likely to get sore in this area.

If you find anything or you are still unsure, please contact your GP and get his/her advice. You say that you feel that it would be more noticeable if this was something serious. This is not necessarily the case. If there is anything untoward the sooner it is investigated the better. Don't be put off contacting your GP because of Covid. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Your GP is still there for routine health conditions and just waiting for you to call.

If you explain to the receptionist that you need an urgent appointment and tell her why, she will fit you in as soon as she can. I sincerely hope that you will find that there is nothing to worry about. Do please keep us informed about how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards

    Jolamine

  • Thanks for the advice, Jolamine.

I did another check this morning and found the bump again (once again, after rolling my fingers over several times), but it is very slight and I could feel something which resembled a tube in that area. I checked my right testicle and found a very similar slight bump around the back, so I am wondering if it is just the end of the tube which connects to the epididymis and I just haven't been checking my testicles thoroughly enough in the past. I've always checked the front and sides but never really checked extensively around the back.

However, I will keep a close eye on it over the next week or two and just check daily for any changes. May just end up booking an appointment with a GP within the next month anyway for peace of mind.

    Hi Robo,

Monitor this carefully and, if you are at all unsure, see your GP. As I said before, you're better sure than sorry.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

Fingers crossed that it's nothing serious.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine
