Swollen groin lymph node & night sweats - anyone?

Hi,

it started about a year or 2 ago with drenching night sweats that have increased in frequency and intensity. GP's thought it could be hormonal or a virus so did bloods which were normal.

Fast forward to now and I am still having the night sweats along with constant infections and different doses of antibiotics each time along with random rashes and itching. The past month I notice a small swelling sticking out near my groin which has grown bigger in size (it's not huge but visible? It feels hard, non tender and almost rubbery. The GP thought it could be a virus so bloods done which were all okay apart from showing I had previously had EBV. I can't go in to see GP because of Coronavirus and am driving myself mad. She doesn't think it's anything to worry about but I'm not so sure, she then just said she would write to a specialist and get their opinion on what if anything should be done. Anyone any experience with anything like this?

  • Hello Aimz21 and welcome to our forum!

It looks like your GP took the right course of action in writing to a specialist to get their opinion on this. The specialist will have the expert knowledge required to tell you more about what it might be. I hope you will get to meet others on the forum who have had a similar experience and that they will come and share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that you find out more about this soon and that everything turns out fine

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Aimz21.

I am currently going through the same thing as you and it's comforting to know I am not alone..I joined this forum today as I am worrying myself sick about a lump I have found in my groin.

I randomly felt mine 3 weeks ago. GP had a look (luckily got an appointment even with covid19) and he said nothing to worry about. It will go down in about 2 weeks but to contact them again if it doesn't go down, or it gets bigger or if I develop symptoms. He said it could be because I've had a virus I've been fighting off but I said I haven't felt unwell.

In the last 10 days I've developed aching in that area on and off. I also sweat a lot in bed and have done for a while. One night I woke up and had to change my clothes and sheets. My armpits have had a dull occasional ache and pulsing up to my collar bone. All of these indicating lymph nodes. I feel extremely run down. I haven't been sleeping well now because I'm worried so much so that is obviously contributing to the fatigue. I've lost my appetite and loosing weight and now sitting at around 8st.

I phoned the GP again on Friday who read out what the other GP said and to be honest, she didn't sound that bothered after I told her of my symptoms. I said it's worrying me a great deal so she suggested I could have an ultrasound scan but they are not doing any routine treatment at the moment but will try and get a request in. So that was Friday last week -, fingers crossed I will hear of something soon.

I really hope you hear from a specialist soon but I would keep chasing them - please keep me updated xxx

  • Thank you both for your replies.

CornishG, sorry to hear you are also going through a similar predicament to myself at the moment. I hope you get your ultrasound appointment soon, it's really tough because of Covid-19 affecting everything at the moment. My GP also didn't seem concerned even though I haven't been able to get an appointment to be examined, she did bloods and tests for viruses which were all normal so pretty sure it's not a virus plus the lump doesn't hurt at all does yours? I had to say I was worried over and over before she agreed to write to a specialist for advice and I think she thinks I'm being paranoid.
I've also been suffering with bad indigestion & stomach aches but not sure if it's because I'm anxious about everything at the moment, feeing really full quickly also

My GP said she would ask the specialist if any further test at are needed or not so I'm half expecting them to take a watch and wait approach due to Covid-19 and will drive myself crazy if that is the case.

keep me updated, I hope everything settles down for you and it turns out to be nothing xx

  • I was very surprised that I got a call from the first GP on the day I rang and then he asked me to come in that afternoon. I got a second opinion from another GP a few weeks later &she  was the one who suggested I get an ultrasound just for my piece of mind. She said the first GP recorded down it was a benign lymph node.

The lump itself is not painful but my groin usually always aches or is uncomfortable....I wouldn't say it's "painful" like I don't have to hold that area and it doesn't stop me from doing anything on a day to day basis...I can just feel the area isnt happy. If I put my finger on the lump it also has a pulse? If that makes sense.

What size is your swelling /lump?

My friend who works in radiology/MRI says they are bringing in more oncology referrals now and are starting to see more routine appointments from tomorrow.

I have similar eating issues as you too. I've lost my appetite and never hungry and also don't need to eat much before I feel full - I'm trying to make myself think that's the anxiety part though. I've been too anxious to eat for weeks that my stomach has shrunk? ‍♀️

Anxiety plays havoc with tummy's so I think that has a lot to do with your stomach aches and indigestion.

Its good to chat about this. It's really calmed me down today knowing we are are in a similar boat.

    Here anytime xxx

  • Hope you're doing okay? My GP contacted me today as the consultant had lots of questions and said if lump there in 3/4 weeks to refer to Hematology. He was asking if I have had headaches, rashes, ulcers and I have had all of those- however I didn't think ulcers and headaches were necessarily related to this type of possible cancer?
I have lumps both sides but there are not huge so I'm thinking maybe it's just normal to feel these painless lumps and I'm going to be wasting everyone's time.

    Any update for you? X

  • Hiya. I thought I had replied to this the other day, wondered why I hadn't heard anything from you and then realised my reply was not sent! So so sorry! ‍♀️

You are definatley not wasting anyone's time! It's good that the specialist is now on the case. Do you have an appointment or anything with them? You have symptoms they need to look into so it's sounds like they are taking you seriously.

Yes. I managed to get an ultrasound done on Thursday. He scanned the area and said all seemed normal. So that put my mind at rest a bit. But this morning in the shower.... I felt the area again and as well as the pea sized ball shaped lump there is a very painful swelling further into my "pubic" area (if that makes sense) I felt it and it really hurt and continued to throb for a while afterwards. I'm not sure if the ultrasound scanned that far across (I felt it go up and down and up to my hip bone)

I had blood tests done on Wednesday and haven't had the results yet so will call the GP tomorrow and ask them about the results and also speak to them about this new painful swelling. The original swelling I was referred for never hurt at all. ‍♀️

Still getting night sweats and loosing weight, tired a lot but not enough to make me want to go to bed during the day, and no other symptoms.

Keep me updated on your specialist. Message me directly if you want. Xx

  • [@CornishG]‍ Thank you, Sorry for the delay. How are you? I have an ultrasound later today on the lymph node in my groin, one has popped up in my neck too but I'm assuming if this scan is okay that the neck ones will be too :) the GP is also ruling out autoimmune diseases as they can present with similar symptoms. Still pretty much in the dark atm.

Hope your bloods were okay? Are you feeling any better?

  •

Hiya! Great to hear from you!

How did your ultrasound go today? They usually give results there and then don't they?

My bloods took a while to come back but they were normal. I went back to the doctor's as I was getting a horrible pain coming from my hip/thigh/groin area. Explained that I had a bike accident in March and the handle bar dug into my leg. The GP said it's just soft tissue damage and can take a while to heal.... But it never caused me any discomfort until mid April??

‍♀️ I don't know! I'm just keeping an eye on it now. I've put my weight back on finally..... I looked so poorly and lost almost a stone in weight (was just under 9st and dropped to 8stone) I'm getting out running a bit more again and I'm actually back to work next week after being furloughed from dentistry since March.

Keep in touch and let me know how the scan went xxx

  • Hi how did you get on hope all ok

  • Hello,

I hope you are okay. Do you have any updates? My boyfriend developed a large golf sized lump on the front of his neck on Friday and the doctor saw him right away. He used to always get swollen lumps on neck but nothing of this size and we always thought nothing of it. He's not unwell either. He has also suffered with extreme night sweats for a long time now which is very worrying and he has lost over 3 stone. He is in his 20s. On Friday the doctor told him that it is suspected cancer and that he needs to go to the ENT unit. We have an app next week. The doctor also found swollen lympnodes on his groin area too. I am so so worried and scared that he may have cancer. I can't stop thinking about it and I feel physically sick. Did yours turn out to be nothing? I need to stay positive but it's so hard.
