borderline cell changes and HPV positive: freaking out

Dear all,

I am 26 and a half and I have done my PAP test again after several years (I don't even remember how many years ago I did the last one). My results came back and it was a shock: HPV positive,  borderline cell changes and a referall for a colposcopy. I am very very anxious because I have read about girls that had borderline changes identified with the smear teast but then they found them to have cancer at the colposcopy appointment. I find it very difficult to think about anything else, it's a nightmare.   I am here looking for reassurance and I hope you can help me going through the waiting...

Thank you a lot!!!!

  • I had my colposcopy on Monday, hated everything minute of it. He has taken biopsy and I will know my results in 4 weeks, he said it didn't look cancerous but you never know. So didn't really make me feel any better. Waiting this four weeks is going to a nightmare as I suffer with really bad anxiety anyway. Just hope it's all ok.

  • Hi everyone, I just wanted to come on here and explain my experience. I recently had my smear back, my first ever smear, the results of which showed HPV positive with borderline cell changes. The same as a lot of people on this post, I was so unbelievably worried and went straight to Google to look up peoples previous experiences. I found this post pretty quick into my search which helped a lot, but my appointment wasn't for 6 weeks after my smear so I was constantly thinking about it. Today I had my colposcopy, and it went really well, it was over in about 2 minutes, the nurses were lovely and reassuring. They didn't find anything abnormal and I have been referred for another smear in a years time. The nurse was really informative too, she said borderline cell changes are low risk and unlikely to be cancerous, but it's necessary to keep an eye on them just in case. If you receive a letter inviting you for a colposcopy, it's so easy to worry and stress but I hope you can find some comfort in mine and other peoples experiences, it's just routine and it's very likely you'll be okay :)

  • I have exactly the same.. HPV positive and borderline changes x I have just received my letter telling on. I just got it on Saturday and I waited nearly 5wks for my results. So now it says I'll get a letter in 14 days for a colposcopy appointment x I have just posted something on this group but not sure we're it is as it's my first time on here lol x (so if u want to have a look.. :) x and I no it's easier said than done but try not to worry or stress (or Google) ha x as that won't help anything x and we won't no anything till our colposcopy x (sending u a hug) x

  • Thank you for sharing your experience, I had a letter Hpv positive with abnormal cells I'm so worried! I haven't stopped googling all day I just can't stop thinking about it . I have to go for a colposcopy.
