Lump in nose

Hi all,

My mother went to ENT because of blocked ear and hearing loss (one side only), the doc said it was glue ear (unusual cos this is usually a thing kids get but adults can apparently get it rarely too), after this he did camera up nose to check further and found a lump in the nose. Apparently we all have 2 lumps in the nose but with my mum one side is slightly larger or something. I'm not sure where abouts in the nose the lump is but he ordered an MRI and biopsy and the MRI has come through already.

I'm worried sick it's cancer-doc never mentioned cancer or what it could be but the fact he ordered MRI and biopsy and MRI came through so quickly has me really worried. She has no other symptoms except the ear thing-but the glue ear is not supposed to be connected to the nose lump I don't think but now I'm thinking all sorts of things like cancer and that's caused the ear problem.

I know I should just wait for the results of the MRI but I'm so worried I just need some advice on what this could possibly be and I've been googling and all malignant cancer posibilities don't sound like they have a very good prognosis. I mean the doc wouldn't be ordering an MRI AND biopsy if he didn't think cancer would he?

  • Yes, I have had a lot to worry about the last couple of years, and as I said health issues terrify me!

  • Hi Mary, I  had my ENT appointment yesterday, where the Consultant did a biopsy, he said that I will need a scan and whatever it is it will have to be removed.  At least things are moving on. x

  • Hi how are you doing now Christmas, any update? My mum got the scan results through and they were clear thank goodness but they are still doing biopsy-which is finally happening next week. The glue ear cleared up so that was benign but part of the operation was supposed to be about fixing that and they would do the nose biopsy at the same time. The fact they still want to do the nose is now worrying as the main issue was supposed to be the ear, they obviously want to find out what it is. Everytime I search lump in nose in google it comes up with results for cancer..even though it's meant to be quite rare (and even rarer in women) there are not that many other things it could be I don't think so it's worrying. I can't stand the waiting and worrying! She has absolutely no symptoms at all now the glue ear has cleared up so that is promising and I guess if it does turn out to be cancer or something else that needs removing it was lucky it was found this way.

Hope all is fine with you. If anyone else here has any experience with nasal lumps that would be very helpful too x

  • Hi Cantmoveon, well,  I had the tumour removed in April, no radiotherapy.  It is an extremely rare cancer as you know.   l have seen the Consultant a few times since the surgery and I had a MRI at the beginning of August which came back clear.  However I am constantly anxious about it coming back and it is having a really negative impact on my life.

I hope that your Mum has good news after the biopsy and you can stop worrying.

    Best wishes

    Lyn

  • Hi Lyn,

So sorry to hear what you've been through. It's reassuring the MRI came back clear-I wish there was more info about this type of cancer on here, there don't seem to be many stats at all. I know there are a few posts from people who have had nasal cancer, you've probably already read them. I'm sorry you are feeling really anxious about it coming back but I'm sure that is completely normal for what you've been through. If you need any support or just to chat you can always PM me. Hope you start to feel better about things soon x

  • Just to give an update. It seems that based on the clear scan results there was no need for a biopsy. Bit of a misunderstanding I think what with Covid delaying everything for months and my mums ear problem clearing up I think the hospital still thought they were going to treat that. Even though mum made sure to tell at least 2 different people beforehand that she didn't need the ear surgery anymore I don't think it got passed on leaving us thinking the hospital still wanted to do the nose biopsy. Anyway, so she will just be checked out again in a few months time. It appears we were all worrying for nothing. I don't know what the abnormality was/is but it appears it is not of concern right now based on the scan results. Thanks guys for all the support, wishing you all the best.
