Do I have colon cancer?

Hi all,

I am 24 years old, male, around 175lbs. I have been experiencing rectal bleeding for 5 years now. When I first got it I went to my GP and she told me it was hemorrhoids. I was relieved and thought it would pass. Back then it was a lot of blood, sometimes when I went for a bowel movement only blood got out. Then there was a period when it was gone and then it reappeared again. I am going weeks with bleeding and then it stops for some time and then it's back again. It's weird that sometimes I can bleeed and not bleed in the same day (in the morning I do in the evening I don't or vice versa).  I am also occasionally bloated and feel like I am constipated (although I go every day around two times, sometimes it feels really hard). Sometimes stools have very loose consistency or a more narrow. I have no pain, no discomfort (apart from occasional bloating), no weight loss, no nausea and vomiting. I am anemic but that is probably due to the fact that I have never eaten meat and I don't take iron supplements. I went to the doctor again this summer, he performed a rectal exam with his finger and told me that his call is on hemorrhoids.

I think that it can be due to hemorrhoids and poor dietary habits (I have always eaten really fast and hence the bloating) and maybe eat too much bread/pasta. I also don't do enough physical exercise. However when I don't go to the toilet normally and I bleed I get really scared sometimes. If it was something more serious for 5 years it would have got worse surely. But I can never be sure. I am scared to go to another doctor ( although I probably will soon).

Please let me know what you think.

  • Hello ,

reading your post it seems to me that you have identified several factors relating to your lifestyle that could play a part, diet and exercise. Why would you not consider this probable coupled to hemorroids or IBS rather than reach for a more dramatic answer. The small stools you mention certainly point towards ongoing inflammation of the bowel. If this started because of your lifestyle it will not change until that does

Nobody would be able to determine a diagnosis here on this forum so the best thing you can do is to see your doctor and explain the length of time this has been going on and your concerns. l am surprised you have carried on this long without doing so and would urge you to seek the help of those that have the skills to give you the answers you seek.

Good luck and l hope you it goes well for you,

                                                                                                                  David

  • My husband has just been operated on and had the right part of the bowel removed where there was a cancerous growth. He was suffering beforehand from a high level of anemia which is a symptom of cancer. It was not followed up at our GP practice and it was only when he underwent a colonoscopy, due to an unsettled stomach, that the cancer was discovered. Have you asked your doctor to refer you for a colonoscopy? This would show up any sign of colon cancer.
