In the past, the consultant would have made the assumption that the fullness was simply some food making its way through your bowel. Now, there are CTs available, so it makes sense to confirm that supposition.  But remember that thousands of people get referred for urgent scans every day, but only a small number of them turn out to have cancer.

What concerns me is that when he pushed on my stomach, I could feel the fullness and it hurt where he pressed. So that makes me think there must be a lump there or something?

I know it can't be an accurate assessment but does bowel cancer usually hurt if you press on it? 

I have both IBS and recurrent diverticular disease, neither of which are cancer, but both of which can cause pain when the bowel is pressed.  I'm not sure you can read too much into what you felt, particularly since you were most likely in an anxious state to begin with.  

It felt like a vertical ridge running down just to my right of my belly button. I could feel it as he pressed so hopefully you're right and it's just food passing through causing it to feel full. Thank you for taking the time to reply. Every little thing helps to deal with the situation 

To update:

My scan was on the 5th Feb. Got a letter today asking me to go in at 8:30am on 14th. This seems very soon. Should I be worried? So much less than 2 weeks for consultant getting the results 

Additionally I received a copy of consultants letter to gp where he describes that he felt a vague, mobile mass in the right iliac fossa although he couldn't clearly delineate this. Having looked up causes of masses in right iliac fossa I'm very concerned it's bowel cancer as there aren't many other reasons
