Pain (Dull/Sharp) bottom left ribcage (underneath)

I started with a really bad cough 3 month ago, really hard coughing/straining myself coughing to the point I felt I had pulled a muscle. This resulted into a real sharp pain under my left rib cage when I breathed in or laughed moved etc. Especially at night. I couldnt lie on that side for a while and often woke up in real pain.  I used to wake up in pain. Definitely  not a broken/bruised rib. I went to the a and e who placed a stethoscope on my back and chest and said its nothing to do with my ribs unexplained. I had been coughing really bad and so had a friend (we smoke weed)  They never scanned me though. Gave me anti inflammation tablets and said it should go In a few week. Fast forward a good 3 to 4 week and I'm still feeling a dull pain under my left side rib (bottom) when breathing in hard or laughing etc. Although not as bad as a initially. I have a history of drug abuse, cocaine, weed, cigarettes etc. I'm 26 and really scared something serious is developing slowly. my 33 year old brother died 6 month ago due to throat cancer. I'm so scared. I feel like it should be gone now. The A and E guy literally only spent 5 mins with a stethascope on my chest ribs and back and said it definitely wasnt a broken rib and likely was an inflammatory virus or pulled muscle. The pain is not as bad but always there I smoke and drink a lot. I thought it would be gone now. Any help??

  • Hi there Gavin,

Firstly, I’m sorry to hear about the sad passing of your brother.  I can see the post is a few months old, which your symptoms may have changed in that time...I hope for the better! I do have professional experience in healthcare, I want you to know I appreciate how open you’ve been and how honest about everything. If your symptoms at still present, I would advise that you seek some support and help from your gp. Be as open with them as you have been here. Express how worried you are aswell. I feel if the symptoms have been persistent and given your past history, a full blood work up of your FBC(full blood count), BCP(biochemical profile), CRP(standard Inflammatory market), Amylase(helps rule out  pancreatitis-please don’t think this is the cause, I’m not suggesting it is, many tests are done to often rule out causes but I do think it would be helpful) and hopefully taken a more thorough history and assessment.  Also, please don’t take this insensitively, but if your gp doesn’t suggest it, please ask for some mental health support. Even if to just be able to express your concerns and discuss them and gain some emotional and well being support. I don’t want to assume your life in regards to your use of alcohol and weed, I hold no judgement, I feel you’ve mentioned these because you feel they maybe linked to your health concerns? It maybe. The blood tests can look at this in some areas-liver function, kidneys, electrolyte imbalances, inflammation etc), I would also ask if an ultrasound scan would help. Try make a list of when it started, how long, if anything aggravates it or eases it etc and any other general health, social, emotional and medical history. If your symptoms are persistenting, pleae visit your gp, but I do hope you have received some support and your symptoms have been relieved! :)

  • Hi gavin, can I please ask what happened, did you find out what the pain is, I have the same pain, I've had it 6 weeks, and it hurts, I'm taking my 4th lot of antibiotics and my 2nd lot of steroids, and I'm scared, it's like you just described me, I also have taken what you have, plus some, I'm 43, and only smoke tobacco now, but this pain is outstanding.

  • Did you find out what this pain was?
