Prosthetic testicle

Morning everyone,

found out yesterday that I have to have my right testicle removed next week as there is a "sinister looking mass" inside it. Whilst not definitively confirmed, they are treating it as a cancer and going ahead with the removal. They asked me if I wanted a prosthetic testicle put in and I instinctively said "yes" as I just assumed it was the best thing to do. Now, have read that there can be some complications with the fake ones. Anyone got any good/bad experiences with fake balls?!?!
Thanks in advance,

  • Hi Hightower272. Welcome to the forum.

I am not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications. Also, I haven't needed a prosthetic testicle.

I think before deciding, you need to know what type of prosthesis would be used. I'm no expert but I believe they can be saline filled, silicone gel filled, or solid (but still soft).  Personally, I wouldn't want a silicone gel one, because of the issues that have happened when breast implants have leaked.  A saline leak would be a nuisance, but saline is harmless.  A solid implant can't leak, of course.

If you could phone the hospital and speak to the surgeon's secretary, you might get more information about the implant.  Once you know that, you can do more targeted research.

Or you could have this discussion when you meet the surgeon before the op, but of course the surgeon will be busy and may have less time to spend with you.

  • Hey Telemando,

Thanks for your reply, sound advice. Will get into the hospital today and find out some more. When the consultant asked me if I wanted a prosthetic one, I was in such shock that I just said "sure, do they do glow in the dark ones?" Couldn't think of anything sensible to ask at the time!
    Thanks again

  • Normally, most people think of the best questions about two hours after they've seen the consultant - however I reckon that is one of the best questions ever!  The idea of a glowing scrotum is great. You'd never need a torch to read a book at night!
