Bloody Discharge

Hi,

Wishing you all a very happy new year, hope it brings you lots of happiness.

I am starting out the year with the same concerns I started the last one with! Back in January 2018 I started bleeding in between periods, sometimes it was just spotting but other times it was quite heavy (almost resembling a period) Since then, I have been to multiple doctors, for multiple scans and the only thing I have been told is that it is Cervical Erosian.

I had a regular smear result back in July 2019 and but it's now been two years of bleeding and panic. Has anyone else had this? My main concern is that something may be missed. The bleeding is dismissed a lot by GP but I see it every month without fail and it's always on my mind. I know that they only test smear samples for HPV now and if there is no sign of it, the sample is destroyed and not tested further.. but isn't that only linked to 97% of CC?

I've also been getting leg and back pain (although in my legs it's more like a numbness/ache which I know, cannot be down to exercise or overdoing it... I'm not the most active person!) It is worse at night, I have a water bottle or bath to soothe it but they just feel bad.

I guess I'm looking for some kind of reassurance that this kind of thing happens. Or if you have had a similar experience, how did you communicate with the doctors? I have been a lot (I am probably annoying them with how many times I have been back) and I don't feel like they are addressing my concerns. I am 28 and my periods have been regular for 13 years. I have an appointment tomorrow PM so will hopefully get a referral tomorrow and go to a gynaecologist but any advise on how to voice my concerns would be appreciated as I must not be doing a good job at the moment.

Thank you for taking the time to read and I do apologies if I have misjudged where to post this.

All the best.

  • Dear HopingForHealth,

I’d like to start off by saying there is absolutely no need to apologise for stating your concerns on this server. After all if this is something that is worrying you, and has been for a while, it’s good that you’re getting it off your chest.

I am in no way medically trained or an expert in these matters but perhaps I could just offer some other reasons as to why you have been experiencing these issues with intermenstrual bleeding and pains as opposed to the rather stark conclusion of cancer.

I know it can be hard to trust your doctors sometimes, especially if you’re really worried about something! I’m a chronic hypochondriac, even to the point where I convinced myself I had a brain tumour to an extent that I actually started suffering from really bad headaches, which disappeared when I just stopped worrying so much! However, I think you should just try your best to trust them in this instance, and please don’t focus on the 3% of the 0.1%, you’re so much better than worrying over such a small risk. What about the 100% of the 99% ? :)

It is so much more likely that you are suffering from another condition, maybe polyps, beningn cysts ( although this is unlikely seeing as you said you’ve had scans to rule abnormal growths out ), possibly even hormonal balances. Have you had any hormonal blood tests recently? I think it’s more than likely you’re having some unusual fluctuations, even though you’ve had regular periods for so long, which are causing these episodes of bleeding (as you said the bleeding can sometimes even resemble a period which usually wouldn’t be characteristic of the spotting that can occur for those with cervical cancer). There is even the possibility that all this is just a physical manifestation of stresses in your life, it’s crazy how anxiety can make issues so much worse, and from my experience it doesn’t have to come with the general nervousness that you would usually attribute to health based anxiety.

Nevertheless, always keep in touch with your doctors when you’re concerned about anything at all, after all they’re there to help put your mind at ease no matter what ( properly push your doctor so they can truthfully feel your concerns and get your sorted ) and please keep the server updated on your journey.

Wishing you the best of health and hope your issues are resolved so you can get back to normal life!

  • Hi, just wondered if you got an answer to your symptoms? I have been suffering similar ones recently and I'm fearing the worst too. I have really bad health anxiety so of course I'm terrified.

  • Hi P123,

Sorry to hear you are feeling that way, I know first hand how consuming it can be :(

I did get an answer! I self referred to a gyaneacologist privately, during the appointment, she examined me and treated the Cervical Erosion instantly. I have to go back in a few weeks to have it possibly done again but it really put my mind at rest to actually voice my concerns and feel listens too! The bone pain is connected to a vitamin D deficiency which is being improved by taking vitamins for.

Having also suffered health anxiety for many years now, I understand how much easier it is to say than do when you hear try not to panic and reach out to a doctor but I hope this eases some worries for you in the meantime.

  • Thanks for getting back to me Hopingforhealth! This reassured me. I've been considering going private too but not sure how to go about it as I've never had to do it before? Any advice?

  • That's good to hear :)

I got in touch with my medical care provider who gave me a list of recommended gynaecologists in my area. I got in touch and they booked me in quite swiftly. I would expect your doctors practise may be able to provide you some recommendations?

    Take care!
