Worried! What can I expect from breast clinic referral

I have been referred to my local breast clinic and have an appointment on 6th January. I have really lumpy and glandular breasts and felt a small lump a few days ago. I got an appointment with a nurse who said she felt a large 5cm lump! To say I was shocked is an understatement. I regularly feel my breasts and really hadn't noticed a change that big. I'm so anxious now, she had to prescribe me some anti anxiety meds as I was so scared what this might mean. How can anything 5cm big not be sinister! I am trying to have a fun Xmas eve with my family but it's so hard, I haven't told my husband yet as I don't want to ruin his Xmas too

I am 38 and she tried to reassure me that I'm young, etc, etc but my friend died at 40 from BC so that means nothing to me.

What can I expect when I go to my appt on 6th, will they give me a definite diagnosis?

  • Thanks Vainbear, this not knowing one way or another isn't very nice. X

  • Thank you for your kind words and positivity, it helps so much speaking to you all, it’s so frightening for all of us, but being on here helps so so much and to know you are not the only one going through this xx
  • You are definitely not the only one going through this right now. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that its the news you want.

  • Hi, Just thought I would update on my referral appointment I had today. It was a collection of fluid filled cysts, which to me felt hard, but to the consultant and the doctor who did my ultrasound felt quite soft. They obviously deal with these breast issues day in and day out and know the differences. To me though it was a new change so it did have me in a panic.

I have been on the Mirena coil since August 2019 and she said the change in hormones had probably caused this. I may be prone to them in the future so I need to keep an eye out and get any new ones checked.

The nurse who I had initially seen at the GP, and who had said it felt 5cms wide, had probably just felt swollen breast tissue as it was just before my period when I felt the lump. The cysts were actually fingertip size.
The hospital staff were very kind and kept me informed of what was happening at each stage. Very lovely people. There was also a mix of age ranges in the waiting room, not just older women.
I wish all the luck to you ladies who have recently been diagnosed, and hope your treatment is kind to you. X

  • Phew! We love these sort of updates! Good news indeed love....xx
