7 week wait

Hi, I discovered a lump in my breast back in July this year. I am 59. A GP at my surgery wasn't concerned about it. Last Friday I noticed it had grown and I had puckering to my breast. I went back to my surgery a week ago and another GP was concerned and told me she was referring me to be seen within two weeks. Unfortunately here in Wales the two week urgent referral system doesn't apply, and I have to wait 7 weeks before I can be seen by a Consultant.  So I'm terrified that a lump that I was concerned about 6 months ago is now a concern but not with NHS Wales. My GP is going to write to BCU to ask if I can be seen quicker than 7 weeks but is not guaranteed that I will be seen. It's going to be the longest 7 weeks of my life.

  • Hi there ..

Oh my, that's really bad .. waiting two weeks feels like a lifetime ....  could you find out if you could get a private one .. or ultra scan on it .. l dont know how much, and you shouldn't be put in this position,  it's terrible .. I'd even write to your M P and ask them why the two week rule does not apply there..

Just hope your G P gets a better response.. let us know how you go .. Chrissie x

  • Hi I am so sorry you have to wait so long for your appointment .I was seen in Scotland just a day over two weeks for an urgent referral to the breast clinic and  for my 2nd biopsy. I am waiting just over 6 weeks. I think the holiday period can slow things down as well. Can you view waiting times online for your specific hospital. I hope that you can get seen sooner I know the waiting is really hard thinking of you.  I felt better once I had a date come through. Take care Lesley

  • Hi what a ordeal nobody should have to wait 7 weeks .i know things a dire in the Welsh health service but surely this must be an exception

my son nearly 2 years has been waiting for an urgent hip replacement he lives in Swansea

he paid to see the consultant so could this be a possibility for you ?

this Christmas period is a nightmare I so sorry

    your going through it

i was diagnosed 3 years ago I ok up to now but I know what a traumatic time it is

hope you can get an earlier appointment

  • Thank you to all who have commented on my post. I have managed to get an appointment on Monday with a private consultant. I have a burning sensation pain by my lump and don't want to wait 7 weeks. Ibrufen is managing the pain now.

  • Hi, I paid £200 to see a consultant privately yesterday.  He said the lump is quite big. He asked what date was my appointment scheduled for with NHS when I told him it's not until 28th January, he told me that's too long to wait, and to ring hospital to ask them if they can bring date forward urgently. If I had the test done privately it would be done earlier but costs £1000 just for tests without any treatment if needed. I would have to borrow and get into debt. I found this lump back in July, but my doctor said she wasn't concerned about it. After noticing a puckering on my breast over a week ago I went back but seen a different Doc who immediately referred me for urgent appointment. I feel desperate now and have resort to pleading with NHS appointments before borrowing money for test. If tests are bad news there's no way I can afford to pay for an op. And will them have to plead with appointments system for an earlier op than 28th Jan. my Dad had cancer 6 months ago and is in remission. He was seen very quickly in Spain were him and mum who are both in 80s live.  My mother has shingles and I've not told them yet as don't want to worry them. Coincidentally, I got my three yearly mammogram appointment through for 20th January. My friend got hers through but hers is 9th January. She's offered to swap her appoint date with me. I'm overwhelmed with it all and don't know who to call first. Breast screening or hospital appointments.

  • Hi

i agree you can't go down the private route it's a ridiculous time to wait for this appointment I can't imagine how stressed you must be feeling. I don't think any one will see you now until after Christmas all you can do is try to see your gp again and see if he can do anything to get you in sooner or maybe ring the breast clinic yourself

im so sorry I hope you can get something done

  • I rang hospital this morning. Told them that I'd seen consultant and that he'd advised me to ring and be seen a lot sooner. They're seeing me for tests on 31st December now instead of 28th Jan. I feel much better now :)

  • Just an update. I saw a consultant on New Years Eve. Had Mammogram, Ultrasound and two biopsies. One was from my lymph node. Consultant told me it was cancer and I've to go back next Wednesday to discuss what treatment I'm going to need, depending on what type of cancer it is from the biopsy report. I didn't realise they could tell from just scans that it was cancer. But it's quite a big lump so maybe that how. He told me that chemotherapy could shrink the lump so may only have to have lumpectomy instead of whole breast removed. I'll know more by Wednesday.

  • Hi

I just did my best to look after myself and get on with it
