Breast calcification found at first routine mammogram

Hi everyone.

I recently had my first mammogram at the breast screening clinic, as I've reached the golden age of 50. Results came back unclear and I was referred to the breast screening centre in Glasgow. I thought I'd just be getting a mammogram and go home. But no, at the mammo they'd found an area of concern. I have calcification in an area of my left breast, a wee cluster that the doctor showed me on the screen. She mentioned it could be normal for me but because I'm new they want to check, as this can be precancerous changes. I then had an ultrasound which never showed anything, then had a biopsy which I'll get the results of this Thursday. I was in shock, I only expected to be there and away quickly, but the process took 3 hours. I'd like to say though, the staff there are amazing and were fantastic at explaining every stage as I went through it, and what would be happening next.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared, and yes, I've been googling, but am trying to think the positive, that it's nothing. And even if it is something, then it's precancerous and can be dealt with. Can't it? I've read other posts here that calcification were actually cancerous, although my doc said pre cancerous, if anything.

The waiting is the worst part, isn't it?

Thanks ladies

Lynn xx

  • Hi I had dcis which is ductal cancer in situ

which is supposed to be stage 0 so pre cancer maybe ?

after many biopsies they discovered a small area of stage 1 invasive breast cancer

because I had such a large area of dcis I opted for a mastectomy

    I had reconstruction straight away

but I didn't have any other treatment

is all very scary and the waiting drives you mad

nothing seems straight forward and cases can be different

I'm 3 years down the road now

I never been ill not even a cold

I'm so grateful for those routine mammogram

as the cancer was caught early

hope all goes well for you xx

  • Hi Westcoastwife

My story almost mirrors joanieb....only difference is I had wide spread dcis too- but immediate reconstruction after mastectomy wasn't an option for me .

Just want to stress again - thank god for 1st routine mammogram .....

( I also had no further treatment- other than tablets )

Hope all goes well for you x

  • Morning ladies. Thanks for the reply, mine seems to be a small cluster, so in one area so let's hope that's treatable of needed. They only mentioned pre cancerous to me, did say it could be normal for me as they hadn't seen me before, but I've a feeling that it is something. But if it's pre or early then at least it can be treated. I asked what they do if it's pre cancerous and they said remove that area, but I have seen a few folk now saying it was a full mastectomy which seems e treme, but the alternative is obviously worse.

I appreciate your help, and hope you ladies are OK xxxx

  • Hi,

I was diagnosed the same as you I'm 51 and it was my first mammogram they found calsifications in right breast

sent straight for ultrasound scan and had a marker place inside. Biopsy came back as DCIS I have had wide excision preservative surgery 6wks ago. Just like yourself  I have nothing but good things to say about my whole Cancer Team.

i have had my oncologist meeting and was told that my post op biopsy has comeback as intermediate 10-12% ??

i have been offered follow up treatment of 21 sessions of radiotherapy followed by 5yrs of Tamoxifen tablets.

I am now at the stage where I don't know what to do.

they found it. Cut it out. It has gone. Why am I being offered follow up treatment if it was an invasive DCIS and they have taken it out. ?????
I just want to go back to work get my life back to how it was and just continue being monitored every 3/6 months.

just like yourself I'm so grateful that they found it early enough to do something about it but now I'm more confused about the whole thing now. I hope i haven't made things more complicated for you but prewarning you so you will be prepared just in case.

Hope all comes back as good news, please keep

me informed I'll have for you

  • Hi Angel68, I think I'm already Confused so you couldn't make me worse lol. It's 5.30 and I'm up and wide awake, my brain is just going over it all this morning.

I've read about folk getting radiotherapy after surgery, I'm just thinking it's to make sure it doesn't come back at all, I can totally understand why you're thinking j'ust leave me be'. I don't know how od feel, probably a bit like you though. You just want to get on with life especially if it's not cancer. I guess we are so lucky that they do so much when they do find anything untoward.

I will be a wreck til Thursday, I know it can also be nothing, but the way they've spoken I think it's something. But if it's precancerous it's still going to be a big job by the sound of it.

I hope you'll be OK, it's hard but just trying to accept that it's for you and saving your life. I just wonder what would happen if it had been a year down the line, what would the alternative be?

I'll let everyone know on Thursday, thanks for your help, I'll try and keep an open mind, not easy though xxx

  • Hi Westcoastwife,

Sorry I've sort of butted in half way through everybody's

conversation. You all just caught my eye as I was trying to

find a solution to my confusion with treatment.

im keeping my fingers crossed for you for good news Thursday so I will be waiting to hear from you.

I think I might give my Cancer nurse a call to chat through my thoughts about follow up treatment and whether to have it or not have it.

Good Luck & Praying for good news for you.

  • Hi everyone. I got my results and I have DCIS, the centre called it precancerous, some class it as early stage cancer, and I'm going to call it non cancer to see me through. I have to have surgery in January, then once I've healed a bit I'll get 4 weeks of radiotherapy, all precautionary. Am so grateful for mammograms, and so grateful it was found so early. Still keeping me awake though, as well as the fact I've got a house move coming up, and my boss is a ***. Her most important question was how it would affect my sick leave. In other words how much time will I need off? So I'll be giving her my notice soon. Can't tell her just now as I stay on site. But I need to focus on me, and be nearer to family and friends again to help me through it.

I hope everyone is well, and I hope you have a lovely Christmas and get well and truly spoilt

No doubt I will be on again in the new year with my progress xxxxx

    Take care ladies

  •

    Hi Lynn,

Exactly the same as me. I had my Wide excision breast

conserving surgery 29th October no overnight stay in hospital, You will be fine I'm actually going back to work

6th January. I myself have opted for no follow-up treatment. That is a personal choice even though I'm been offered radiotherapy & 5 years on Tamoxifen tablets.

In the words of my surgeon "If you had a choice, DCIS would be the one to have"

Have an amazing Christmas & New Year xx

    Tina xx

  • Hi Angel68, I didn't k ow you could have a choice of whether to take the radiotherapy. I see my surgeon on the 6th January, nothing has been mentioned about tablets yet, but he will tell me more at the meeting.

I know am lucky, the fact it's so early, the nurse at centre said they couldn't have caught it any earlier. We are both lucky ladies, and I hope you keep well and enjoy every second of the Christmas season.

Thanks for all you help and advice, it means a lot xx
