Pain in Lymph node AREAS but no swelling

I'm reaching out to anyone who can help or has any experience of any of the following.

Im 10 weeks into what started as a sore throat on one side when I teach. I teach quite long hours and at first, holding my neck helped to ease it.

This quickly escalated into constant aching on both side of my neck and inside my throat but deep down, losing my voice which is now quite hoarse and pain in my ears just below/behind ears. Pain in my left groin and left arm pit began.. although mild, with no swelling.

in the past 4 weeks I've become unbelievably fatigued and nauseous, I can't really go anywhere  without being totally wiped out. the neck/groin/under arm pain is unbearable and debilitating and I'm off teaching for the foreseeable.

My first Dr asked me if I thought I had cancer to which I laughed because that wasn't even on my mind. He was quite patronising and said come back in 5 weeks if it's still the same. I didn't last 5 weeks. After 2 I saw someone else. She has referred me to ent but not emergency and did bloods which showed nothing excerpt slightly raised LFT which she was not concerned about. She has given me a throat spray which was unhelpful as it's my neck that is unbearable and I can't teach as I have no voice and a dry irritating cough.

yeaterday she called me to go for a chest X-ray. I just don't underneath what's happening and I just want to know this will end or if anyone had anything similar. Im getting worried as each day I get worse and it seems never ending.

  • Hi,

I was searching for lymph pain with no swelling and found this and it sounds exactly like my issue! I have had an infected molar since April and because of current Covid rules I haven't been able to have a root canal or have it extracted. I have had 7 courses of two antibiotics in this time. The infection spread to my sinuses (confirmed by Sinus CT which showed the root of the molar was the source of the infection) and now my lymph glands are ridiculously painful. Some diffuse swelling in my neck but bloods and Ultrasound have both come back fine. Dr suspects it might be the tooth causing all the issues (lymph pain, sore and inflamed tonsils) but I'm still not able to be referred to have it out!

  • Hi Elou67,

I undestand your Helth anxyety and we all know you're not alone on that regard. At any rate, I would say it's extremely unlikely your symptoms are Cancer related. It really looks like some kind of infection. Have you tried antibiotics already? If not, I would say that would be the first course of action. Amoxicilin is usually prescribed for such things. It's a broad spectrum antibiotic and it's not hard on your body. Of course all this tratment should be precribed by a Doctor. Please let us know of any additional details or issues you may have.

  • Hi Bambi204,

I'm sorry to hear what you're going through. It seems to me you have it all figured out, I can tell you for certain that if you have an infected tooth, it is very unlikelly you'll be able to get rid of the infection with antibiotics alone until you deal with the tooth first. If you ask my advice I would prefer to have the tooth removed than just a root canal. In fact when you do a root canal, regardless of getting some pain relief, it is almost impossible to get completelly rid of the infection and therefore  some of the symptoms may return and they may keep getting worse and worse.

My personal advice is to do everything in your hands to deal with the tooth infection ASAP and a course of antibiotics right after that. Heving dealt with my tooth, I am currently going through a course of alternative (natural) treatment for the reamining infection (it seems my infection may have developed a resilience against some antibiotics after so many years) which could be useful as a complement to the antibiotics treatment, but it's still to early for me to give faith of its efficacy. At any rate, dealing with the tooth already provided a great relief for my symptoms.

  • Hello, These symptoms you list I can tick them all. Can you help me? I'm absolutely desperate? Thanks so much Louise
  • Hi,

Sorry to jump in here and people may not still be around posting but I was googling symptoms (just like I always tell evryone else not to do) and I found this thread.

These symptoms that you have listed, I say yes to all except with the tonsilitis. I used to get this a lot up until mid teens and then not so much now and I don't have any brown spots that I'm aware of.

I do have a tooth right at the back..not wisdom tooth that i can feel a large hole in. I have not been to the dentist due to covid etc and its a bit uncomfortable but not painful.

Anyway, I don't know if it is related but I have found a hard lump in my neck just to the right and slightly above my adam's apple or whatever it's called (I'm female)

It's hard, doesn't move and is between the size of a pea and a malteser. It has no pain at all.

I also have pain in my lymph/gland areas on the sides of my neck when I press on them but no swelling at all.

All observations were normal so I ruled out infection and now I am worried.

I am booked in for blood tests on Wednesday and have been referred for an ultrasound scan on my neck.

I am just worrying that is cancer. I do also have B12 deficiency which I have injections for every 3 months and I did once have vitamin D deficiency which I took tablets for but this was 5 years ago.

Any advice would be appreciated many thanks.

  • Hi Cindy,

Regarding the posibility of a tooth infection (which was my case), if you never had a root canal on that tooth you feel a hole in, it's almost certain you have NO infection there. I say this because tooth infections hurt A LOT. the only way it doesn't hurt is that you had the tooth nerve removed due to a root canal.

Other than that I'm sorry to tell you I'm no specialist and can only tell you about my personal experience.Although if you have pain in the lymph nodes for just a few days, it can be due to a viral infection most of which the body takes care of in a couple of weeks.

The lump in your neck could be your Tonsils which also get swollen and may or may not hurt due to infection.

At any rate, as far as the symptoms you describe, it seems to be something easy to handle as long as you seek medical care.

I hope you find a solution soon and please let us know.

  • Hello my friend, I had a tooth procedure where they extracted my tooth. After 1 week i started getting all these symptoms. Do you have any advice.

    Thanks

  • Hi, know this is an old post but it's sounding pretty similar to my issue.

Been in constant pain since October 2020, pain started in my neck then spread to my ears and jaw, I assumed dental so I booked an appointment and they did an X-ray, nothing.

went to the doctors was told viral infection, fair enough, went home.

since then the pain is now in my armpit and groin and still feel rotten. Was referred to ent but they're not seeing non emergencies atm (stupid COVID) but have had bloods (normal) and ultrasound on my neck, they found a lump on my thyroid but apparently they are 'convinced' it's benign?! I thought only a biopsy could rule that out?

And I've had a separate issue involving pelvic and vaginal pain since April 2020 that is getting fobbed off, been sent to gynaecologist and he just put me on the pill to stop my periods....can't help but be worried that there's something sinister going on.

  • Hi all,

I have just seen this thread and i too, have been feeling rather tired. I also have been experiencing pain in my left armpit and left groin. Have given bloods and im awaiting the results but was just wondering if anyone actually got to the bottom of what causes this pain other then a "virus". Please let me know. Thanks

  • I have just seen this and wanted to join in as I am really struggling at the moment with many of the same symptoms.
I have had a recurring sore throat - usually on only one side which radiates into my ear & jaw for the last 4 - 5 years. Bouts las from one day to around 6 weeks. I also suffer from anxiety but lately I have also felt very low. I am constantly tired and not even a full nights sleep can refresh me.

I saw my doctor aroun 2 - 3 years ago regarding the throat issue - she had a quick look down my throat and in my ears and had a feel about for any lumps or swellings - said she couldn't see/feel anything gave me ibuprofen  and that was the end of that so I am nervous to go back as I feel like I'm wasting their time especially as we are dealing with COVID.

Does this sound familiar to anyone. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
