Pain in Lymph node AREAS but no swelling

I'm reaching out to anyone who can help or has any experience of any of the following.

Im 10 weeks into what started as a sore throat on one side when I teach. I teach quite long hours and at first, holding my neck helped to ease it.

This quickly escalated into constant aching on both side of my neck and inside my throat but deep down, losing my voice which is now quite hoarse and pain in my ears just below/behind ears. Pain in my left groin and left arm pit began.. although mild, with no swelling.

in the past 4 weeks I've become unbelievably fatigued and nauseous, I can't really go anywhere  without being totally wiped out. the neck/groin/under arm pain is unbearable and debilitating and I'm off teaching for the foreseeable.

My first Dr asked me if I thought I had cancer to which I laughed because that wasn't even on my mind. He was quite patronising and said come back in 5 weeks if it's still the same. I didn't last 5 weeks. After 2 I saw someone else. She has referred me to ent but not emergency and did bloods which showed nothing excerpt slightly raised LFT which she was not concerned about. She has given me a throat spray which was unhelpful as it's my neck that is unbearable and I can't teach as I have no voice and a dry irritating cough.

yeaterday she called me to go for a chest X-ray. I just don't underneath what's happening and I just want to know this will end or if anyone had anything similar. Im getting worried as each day I get worse and it seems never ending.

  • Hi sorry to hijack this post but I am going through this exact thing. Mustangsally that sounds awful so sorry what did you do and did you get it sorted?

I have had an infection for 5 months been on so many antibiotics drs can't find it. Thanks

  • Hi Poppycat1, Maybe you can be a little more specific? Do you already know you have an infection and where it is located?

I believe Mustangsally (as well as most on this post) didn't exactly know what was causing her symptoms and sadly, she's been inactive for some time it seems.

  • Hi, I'm still suffering from painful throat, armpits and groin plus fatigue after 4.5 months. I've had throat ultrasound, CT scan of groin etc and many blood tests and finally saw ENT consultant. All tests were normal except that Epstein-barr virus was detected. This EBV shows up in many conditions and is linked to Glandular fever.

If you search EBV, read the Mayo clinic and CDC websites...

I'm now searching for UK expert with knowledge of this virus who can advise best treatment or how to suppress the virus.

  • We sound so similar.

I've got pain in both sides of my groin and pain in both armpits.  I also get dull aches in my neck. I've got what appears to be a hard lymph node in front of my right ear. But I'm still waiting for my ultrasound.

All my bloods are normal, apart from a slight vitamin D deficiency, but I'm told it isn't low enough to cause symptoms.

Hope your doing ok. The waiting is the worst bit and I'm finding it very hard to keep my mind off it.

  • Hi wooWoopie.

I'm going to list a great number of symptoms (could have  developed years ago) that may look very unrelated, but they actually could be. If you have many or most, please let me know:

    1. Pain in lymph nodes, but they don't feel particularly swolen (usually in more than one place).

    2. Ache in neck apparently from being tense. Seems like being posture/spine related.

    3. Your gums bleed and/or swell easily.

    4. Large brown spots areas that don't quite look like birth mark. Could be in the kidney area and also your head if your male and boldish.

    5. You suffer from articulation problems. Example: your knee suddenly decides to hurt without doing any wrong movement. It could also be a toe.

    6. You get amigdalitis/tonsillitis more often than usual.

    7. You suffer from your back, most likely both lumbar and cervical area.

    8. You get tonsil stones with some frequency.

    9. You have noticed what looks like a swollen, hard lymph node somewhere from the neck up, which does not hurt.

There are more symptoms I could name, but these  are the most common. As many conditions can cause a small number of these symptoms, its important to establish you have many or most if not all to consider going further down this path.

  • Not sure I follow what you are suggesting. I've never had a root canal. Just a couple of fillings.

But in answer to your questions.

    1. Yes

    2. Yes

    3. No

    4. No

    5. Yes, but I do have arthritis in my knees so pain, particularly when it's cold is fairly common.
    6. As a kid, quite a few times. Never as an adult.
    7. Back pain has been a feature, but only since the symptoms began.
    8. No, never had them.
    9. Yes, next to my right ear.

  • I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I'll be able to help. your symptoms are not a close match to mine, I don't feel I'm the right person to give you advice. I really hope you're able to find the cause. Please keep us posted.

  • Hi guys,

I've been experiencing similar symptoms for a few weeks now, it started with an ache in my neck left side and when I move my neck it feels like something is in there, but occasionally I also feel abit of pain in the right side but its normally just all left sided then about 5 weeks ago I started with a persistent sore throat. The last week or so I've developed pain in my armpit left side, i also keep getting pain in my ear but this lasts literally a few seconds and then goes and it's my right ear and all my pains etc are on my left. I called my dr who said I probably had an infection and this was normal but also put out there he thought I might be going through perimenopause I'm only 33 but my mum started menopause at the same age I am now. After looking things up menopause can cause these symptoms, but I'm not convinced. I've had a cbc and other basic blood work done which came back normal, along with a chest mri with contrast and chest xray which all came back fine. I'm so worried though every little twinge etc has me terrified, I've 6 children the youngest being 4months and I'm so scared that I've got cancer, as these symptoms are persistant and dont seem to be easing. My dr has given me an appointment on the 2nd september to have some more blood work done and he says we will go from there but every day I'm waiting it seems like something else is happening. Has anyone else gotten further in there investigations and got any answers yet?

P.s I like you have also discovered a small lump In front of my right ear but all the pain I've been getting is on my left

  • Hi Elou67, sorry to hear what you are going through. But try not to read to much into your symptoms. I think we'd all have some kind of cancer if we did!

I've had my lymph nodes checked and the hard lumps were just bits of me, not actual lymph nodes. I've since spoken to the GP and highlight my behaviours which aren't normal. Constantly checking for lumps, sleepless nights, lack of appetite, always fearing the worst.. and the list goes on. I was also in a lot of pain.
I've started antidepressants and I'm awaiting some cognative behaviour therapy to address how I think about my body and the focus I have on having cancer. It has already begun to help and the pain is pretty much gone. I'm still struggling to

sleep and still don't eat much but it's a huge step in the right direction.

Everything being normal is a good thing, and as you've said there a bunch of other things that match your symptoms that it could be. But you are doing the right thing by getting it all checked out.

  • Hi whoopiemonster thanks for your reply, I to suffer from really bad health anxiety I joke about it but its serious for me this year alone I've become a Google dr and diagnosed myself and convinced myself I've got bloodclots, pulmonary embolism, internal bleeding, mouth cancer, throat cancer, gerd, multiple bacterial infections, lol the list is endless I become fixated and will google constantly, I then spend ages checking for lumps, bumps and swelling, checkin my heart rate and blood oxygen rate. Every twinge etc has me on google, I'm convinced I've got something serious now. The pain I feel is real so there must be an explanation  for it, i no my anxiety isnt helping and is making my symptoms worse. But I've had a sore throat for weeks now, along with the neck pain and sometimes it's like I can feel something in my neck when I turn my head etc but when I feel around I cant feel any lump or anything, then the last week I've started with these underarm pains  which obviously has had me running to dr google and has me convinced Its breast cancer, it's totally irrational and I no theres loads of reasons why I'm feeling these things but the fear in me overrides any rational thoughts and has me thinking the worst, if I was talking to a friend etc I would be completely rational and convincing them it could be anything and not to think the worse but when it comes down to myself I cant take my own advice. I terrify myself constantly, I no I wont be happy and my kind wont be at rest until I've been properly examined and had all the tests done. I just want to no what it is so I can get it sorted and start living my life again, I haven't always been like this it started around January time and it's just got worse and worse
