Breast lump

Afternoon all,

I've  been referred to the Breast clinic by my GP after finding a lump on my right breast. She said she was pretty positive it's just a cyst and not to worry at all but my minds racing.

My appointment isn't for another week yet and its an urgent referral. I'm trying to take my mind off it but nothings working.

Thought  I'd pop on here and see how everyone handles the waiting. I'm sure my GP is correct in her evaluation but I can't shake the bad feeling.

  • Hi I've just been seen last Wednesday for a lump I found in my right breast they done an ultra sound and said she was sure it was just tissue as the lump didn't show on the scan....for the week leading up to my appointment I couldn't think I couldn't do anything I was a worried mess

  • Hi

    that's a tough one

I wish I had the answer

all you can do is keep busy

if your working that will fill in some of the time

    please stay off dr google

I sorted out every cupboard in the house

I decided if I was going to be in trouble at least the house wouldn't need any tidying

I had a call back from my routine mammogram

    never expected it

unfortunately the waiting goes with the territory

I went for the apt had a biopsy and ultrasound

    nothing conclusive waited again

    more biopsies waited again

I had no symptoms no lump to feel

the outcome took about a month large amount dcis and a 4mm stage 1 invasive ductal cancer

    no lymph nodes involved

I needed a mastectomy had reconstruction at the same time

I have never been ill or felt ill

good recovery no other treatment necessary

    that was 3 years ago

lots of support from my partner

but you have to deal with it yourself

im a terrible worrier and it's hard but until you know try not to waste your time with what might be wrong

  • This also happened to me I've had two ultrasounds in the last 4 months and the lump is just showing as normal tissue its so confusing

  • Hi Northshouse,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the worry that this is causing. It sounds as if your GP is pretty sure that this lump is nothing to worry about, which has to be a positive. Not all breast lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, Fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes. Some women also have naturally lumpy breasts. It isa fact that only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are still on your side.

Don't worry about "the urgent referral" - this is the normal pathway for most breast referrals. In all honesty, I don't think that many of us handle the waiting all that well -  I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and was an emotional wreck, on both occasions. However, that was all 14 years ago and I am still living life to the full. Keeping busy isa good way to help the time to pass - this shouldn't be difficult, this close to Christmas.

It is natural to give vent to our over-active imaginations and this can lead us to all sorts of dark places - try to remind yourself that no amount of worry will change the outcome, so it's a pointless exercise.

My thoughts are with you and I sincerely hope that you'll get good news. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
