You won't necessarily need a colostomy.  It might be possible for the surgeons to carry out a bowel resection, where they cut out the part of the bowel with the tumour, and then rejoin the ends together to give you a working (if slightly shorter) bowel.  My father had this surgery many years ago because of a bowel problem (not cancer) and he made a good recovery.

But I'm afraid that's as far as my knowledge goes. You'll have to ask your consultant for more details as they relate to your case.

Hi justjude over thirty years ago my wife got gangrene of the bowl (she'd been run over the year before and had a smashed pelvis the surgeon missed the damaged bowel, so they had to take quite a bit out, but no bag at all, remember I'm not medicley trained just a pacient, good luck with your future.
