Scared granny!

Hello, I am a newbie with concerns!

I am just undergoing tests for bowel cancer though GP seems to think its highly likely. My ferritin levels are at 5, and I have had chronic Diarrhea for 6 weeks. I don't feel unwell, though a little more tired than usual. I am in a wheelchair most of the time due to Fibromylagia, CFS, and have diabetes and angina too. It's pretty scary! Has anyone else had this ferritin thing?

She also said I am not anaemic?! I though low iron levels meant anaemia....

She said she wanted me to have the colonoscopy urgently but apparently I have to see the consultant first because I'm immobile etc and I don't understand why that makes a difference?

Thank you!

  • Hello Oneloopylady,

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing health problems.

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron. Low levels of ferritin can lead to anaemia so it is possible to have low iron levels without being anaemic.

I'm presuming that as you have diabetes and angina the Consultant who will carry out the colonoscopy will want to make sure that you are well enough and that any possible risks can be minimised. This could be why they want to see you before the procedure.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointments and that things improve soon.

    Best wishes,
