I’m feeling numb!!!?????

I have had chronic pain for 37 years after I was involved in a hit and run incident....... have had spinal ops. from the top to the bottom of my spine!!!?! So in the last few days I have seen my GP, then a dentist and now today another doctor/dentist.  I have now been told that there is a high likelihood that I have throat/mouth cancer and they have sent an urgent referral to a consultant at the hospital.

Help please, what will happen next??????? I had a weird head X-ray....... so weird, which apparently will be sent to the hospital.  Can anyone put my mind to rest on what I can expect next at the Hospital please??????? Thank you x

  • Hi Chattycat

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear about the reason that brings you here.

We do have quite a number of members here who have or have had throat or mouth cancers and I'm sure that once we can link you up with them that they'll be happy to share their experiences and advice with you.

We've a number of threads on the forum which you can find using the search function but you could start by posting a comment on this post. You'll also find within the posts links to personal blogs by two of our members Ian aka [@Anchor1707]‍ and Hazel [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ . I know that other members have found these blogs to be really helpful through their journey.

If you think it might help to talk to one of our team of nurses them please do give them a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

  • Hi Chattcat

I'm Ian ( Anchor 1707) as mentioned by Moderator Jenn and thought i would try and help.

I was diagnosed with throat cancer (tonsil) last year and am now clear after positive response to treatment.
So weird head X ray sounds like you may have had an MRI?

It would normally be a specialist consultant at hospital who would give a proper diagnosis after examination and some tests.
So based on my on experience for ENT appointment you will be seen by a consultant and also have specialist nurses in attendance as well.

Consultant will have a good look in your mouth and feel neck etc and also put scope up nose and manouver to show more detail in throat area. This is not painful at all and you just feel a slight sensation. There is a tiny camera at the end of the scope and they will take pictures etc and will most likely send away for further test at lab.

I would wait until you have seen the consultant before assuming any concrete diagnosis and take from there. The consultant and support team can then describe what, if anything, will happen next eg if tests done ( can take 10-14 days for results) and you will then have a follow up meeting ith the consultant to go over test results and diagnosis and if necessary an outline treatment plan.

I have a thread on here that I started from the get go and I also kept a blog from day 1 as well but Id rather not pre empt anything and share too much until you have some form of diagnosis.

Please try and stay off google as there is so much mis information out there as well as being out of date. We are all different and its too easy to self diagnose worst case scenarios on there.

Please keep in touch and let me know how you get on with appointment and we can take from there and will happily point you towards thread and share my blog but feel a little premature and your symtoms may well be something else.

I should also perhaps mention that the treatment and success rate for throat cancer is high and has one of the highest chances of complete cure after treatment.

Hope helps meantime but please feel free to ask away any further questions you have or want clarity. Also happy if you want to friend request for a one to one chat as can be limited on posts, but you can decide and also if you wish a link to blog.

Happy to help anyway I can

    Best wishes

    Ian
