Refused a smear test despite symptoms

Hi all!

I'm a 27 year old mummy of 3 with a history of abnormal smears since about 17 years old. When I was 18 I had a colposcopy due to abnormal cells. Smears then normalised. Back in 2017 borderline changes where detected but no action needed. Gave birth to my 3rd beautiful baby boy in April 2019. After everything went back to normal I started noticing symptoms that concerned me. Pain during intercourse, bleeding afterwards, excessive bloating, sever lower back, pelvic and leg pain, frequent need to urinate and excessive sweating. Went to GP, she suggested a smear test be performed. August 15th smear test complete. 21st of September nurse received note from the lab saying they threw out the sample as I wasn't due till 2020 despite having a history of abnormal smears and symptoms. GP requested another one be done, 30th of September it was again completed. Nurse rang this morning to say again despite my history plus my symptoms they have indeed again thrown this out! HOW CAN THEY DO THIS TO WOMEN? I have a gyne appointment for the 26th of October where I'm hoping I can finally get some answers but just wondered if anyone else has had this?

Thanks guys xox

  • Hi there

This is standard practice. A smear test is a screening test, not a diagnostic test, and if you are exhibiting symptoms, other investigations would be used...like a colposcopy. The smear test timing guidelines are adhered to and I’ve certainly heard of tests being refused, and tests being destroyed if they are done too early. I’m surprised your doctor suggested a smear test for your symptoms-have no other tests been suggested? xx

  • She booked me in for a gyne appointment on the 26th of this month, where hopefully I'll have the relevant testing done there and then. I think she suggested the smear due to my history??

To be honest I have no idea why things have been suggested I'm just really worried about these symptoms for 2 reasons. 1) I've got a history of cervical cancer within my family. Mum, nanna, grandma & auntie and 2) my nanna had a total hysterectomy at 28 due to cervical cancer and my mum had chemo at around the same age for the same thing. ️ Xx

  • I can see why you’re worried, but I don’t understand how the smear would have been beneficial. It is only a screening test for abnormal cells. The gynaecologist will have a more detailed look at the cervix and go from there...perhaps take biopsies and do a hysterectomy (camera up into the womb).

That’s probably as much as can be done at an initial appointment. They might be able to see something at the appointment, but my experience was that they didn’t confirm it was cancer. I was told there was a lesion but I would need biopsies to confirm what it was. I had 2 punch biopsies taken there and then, and results confirmed a week later it was cancer.

I’ve not been aware of any genetic link with cervical cancer, but I’m so sorry you have experienced it so much within your family. xx

  • Thank you hun, just hope I get some kind of answer or even the ball rolling at least come the 26th.

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Xx

  • Waiting for tests and then results is an awful time...so stressful. I was diagnosed last September and finished all my treatment at Christmas. Feeling good now, thank you. Your appointment will definitely get things moving..you may not find out anything on the day, but in my experience they are quick to get things moving if treatment is needed. I wish you all the best with things. I’m around quite a lot if you ever want to chat. xx

  • No problem...this chat forum is a great source of support, people are lovely. Don’t feel alone, you can come here any time and safely say what you feel or ask any questions. Most of us have been through everything or are caring for someone who has cancer. Never feel alone. xx

  • Cervical cancer is believed to be caused by the HPV virus. You are, unfortunately,  just over the age to get NHS vaccination but you could ask about it anyway.

My work meant I knew something about cervical cancer and I have never heard of it being inherited. Cervical cancer found early is easily treatable.

You need to see a gynaecologist. If they think a smear test is needed they will do one and the lab wont throw it out.

  • Cervical cancer is not solely caused by the hpv virus, but only a very small percentage of cervical cancer is not related to hpv. As I’ve said before, symptoms need further investigation for a diagnosis not a smear test which is just a screening test.

  • Hi, im 20 due to turn 21 in July, I have all of the symptoms you've mentioned above and I'm really worried as I'm constantly fatigued too. I have been refused a smear or any sort of offer to do anything else, to make matters worse I haven't had my HVP vaccine either, how did you get on at the gynie if you don't mind me asking? I don't really know what to do because I'm constantly worried but the doctors don't really want to help I think because of my age I'm not sure.. any advice would be perfect please, thank you x
