This is standard practice. A smear test is a screening test, not a diagnostic test, and if you are exhibiting symptoms, other investigations would be used...like a colposcopy. The smear test timing guidelines are adhered to and I’ve certainly heard of tests being refused, and tests being destroyed if they are done too early. I’m surprised your doctor suggested a smear test for your symptoms-have no other tests been suggested? xx

She booked me in for a gyne appointment on the 26th of this month, where hopefully I'll have the relevant testing done there and then. I think she suggested the smear due to my history?? 

To be honest I have no idea why things have been suggested I'm just really worried about these symptoms for 2 reasons. 1) I've got a history of cervical cancer within my family. Mum, nanna, grandma & auntie and 2) my nanna had a total hysterectomy at 28 due to cervical cancer and my mum had chemo at around the same age for the same thing. ️ Xx

I can see why you’re worried, but I don’t understand how the smear would have been beneficial. It is only a screening test for abnormal cells. The gynaecologist will have a more detailed look at the cervix and go from there...perhaps take biopsies and do a hysterectomy (camera up into the womb). 

That’s probably as much as can be done at an initial appointment. They might be able to see something at the appointment, but my experience was that they didn’t confirm it was cancer. I was told there was a lesion but I would need biopsies to confirm what it was. I had 2 punch biopsies taken there and then, and results confirmed a week later it was cancer. 

I’ve not been aware of any genetic link with cervical cancer, but I’m so sorry you have experienced it so much within your family. xx

Waiting for tests and then results is an awful time...so stressful. I was diagnosed last September and finished all my treatment at Christmas. Feeling good now, thank you. Your appointment will definitely get things moving..you may not find out anything on the day, but in my experience they are quick to get things moving if treatment is needed. Cervical cancer is not solely caused by the hpv virus, but only a very small percentage of cervical cancer is not related to hpv. As I’ve said before, symptoms need further investigation for a diagnosis not a smear test which is just a screening test. 

Hi, im 20 due to turn 21 in July, I have all of the symptoms you've mentioned above and I'm really worried as I'm constantly fatigued too. I have been refused a smear or any sort of offer to do anything else, to make matters worse I haven't had my HVP vaccine either, how did you get on at the gynie if you don't mind me asking? I don't really know what to do because I'm constantly worried but the doctors don't really want to help I think because of my age I'm not sure.. any advice would be perfect please, thank you x
