Feeling really down about breast lump

Hi everyone

So at the moment I have been having examinations and things for a lump that I felt in my left breast a few weeks ago. My gp wasn’t too concerned as she said it was small, smooth and moveable but referred me to the breast clinic to be checked. At the clinic the consultant said it felt harmless and when I had the ultrasound they suspected a Fibroadenoma but did an FNA to make sure.

Anyway on Wednesday I had an appointment to get my results. For the last week or 2 I feel like I have just put my life on hold as I just felt too down to do anything and I just kept saying I will start getting back to normal after my results on Wednesday. However when I went to my appointment on Wednesday they were still unsure about the results from the FNA, they said they are not showing anything too concerning regarding cancer but not the typical results they would expect from a Fibroadenoma, kind of in the middle. So they want me to have the lump removed to be tested properly but the doctor was stressing that he didn’t want me to be worried as he was almost certain it was nothing to be concerned about. I felt a little relieved but then stupidly went home and Googled and found a similar story but the girl ended up having cancer so I have convinced myself I’m going to have breast cancer and it will probably have spread etc ( I always tend to think the worst).

So the last couple of days I have just felt so down and don’t know how to cope. I thought after Wednesday I would know what was wrong but I’m just waiting again. I feel like I have no interest in going out or working or doing anything fun with my children and just so unhappy, my stomach feels in knots and my heart just constantly feels like it’s racing. I know I shouldn’t worry until I know but I just can’t get this horrible feeling to go away. How do you all cope with the worry and is it normal that I should be feeling this down and sad ?

  • Hi Haribo,

I'd say it's completely normal how you are feeling, we all tend to think the worst and ive not met one person yet who when coming down with something/going for tests doesnt resort to doctor google even when we know we always go straight to worst case scenario and convince ourselves we have that! The waiting around unknown is awful, try and get out with your children it will be a good distraction and make the time go quicker.

Im in a similar situation in that ive had a lump for months now, i wasnt too worried about it as im only 28 but then went and got checked and got referred, GP said most likely a cyst and probably disappear after next cycle, its 2 months later large lump still there and ive still not had an appointment through! Luckily i have private health cover through work so gave them a ring today and now have an appointment for next week. Im almost certain it wont be anything but £100 excess so worth the peace of mind. I think the other reason im positive is because ive actually had 2 other scares this year, one cervical, one skin and both times i got myself in to a fettle reading stories convinced worst case scenario and both time turned out to be fine! (Had treatment for precancerous cells but seems pretty commmon these days). Anyways hard to do but try to put it to the back of your mind and keep yourself busy. Best of luck and big hugs!

  • Thank you for the reply, I know I lot of people google and we shouldn’t do it but sometimes I just can’t help myself. I’m not going to let myself do it anymore and just try and trust in what the doctors have said.

yes I can understand you feeling a bit more positive when you have had 2 other scares that have ended up false alarms. My head just seems to go from one extreme to the other, I start thinking about them doing tests to see if it has spread or thinking even if I get treated for breast cancer it will come back and be untreatable, I really need to stop thinking like this. Anyway I really hope you get good results aswel xxx
