Traumatic colonoscopy

I am so glad I found this forum as it has made me feel not a complete idiot. This morning I had a colonoscopy for suspected diverticulitis. I was given fentanyl 50mcg& midazolam 2mg ( sedation & pain relief).i am 60 and hv had various procedures thro the years but hv never experienced pain like it .. they only managed a third of the way into the colon and I had to get them to stop. It was utter agony and I was even screaming. like previous  posts I am not a wimp (having suffered severe endometriosis and getting hysterectomy and ovaries removed at 29 .) I used to pass out with the pain so I feel I hv a fairly high pain threshold now. I really think the procedure needs to be looked at and the sedation and pain relief reviewed , as like many have said it did nothing at all for me . I ended up in tears which is not like me and will certainly not be having another colonoscopy. I feel actually traumatised by the whole thing,,, which is just not me . I am very much a “ get on with it & stop complaining “ person. Thank you to all who hv shared there similar posts on this procedure as you hv made me feel less emotional and embarrassed due to the fact I couldn’t continue. The nurses were lovely but no one said that this had happened before making me feel rather pathetic at not carrying on with it.

  • I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy yesterday, I was already crying after the endoscopy and the doctor asked why I said I didn't think the sedation was working so he gave me more. It still didn't work and I was crying screaming in pain so they have me gas and air this helped calm me down a bit but didn't help the pain. I've since realised contrary to what they told me it was possible for me to have more sedation. I've been crying since I got home because I feel absolutely traumatised by what happened, my doctor had no compassion whatsoever. I also have endometriosis and have had countless surgeries aswell as giving birth and none of it compares to what I went through yesterday.

im thinking of speaking to pals about the sedation procedure and how uncaring my doctor was. Has anyone done that?

  • Reading this thread had made me feel a bit less lonely and traumatic after my colonoscopy today. I had one 3 years ago which was uncomfortable but I had a lovely doctor who took his time and gave me rest points to take gas and air and waited for my ok to carry on.Todays one was horrendous. She just shoved it up fast before sedation took effect ( I don’t think it did anything to help anyway) as I was crying in pain and gasping. Blood pressure went through the roof, but she would not slow down or show any concern, until the nurses suggested she stopped altogether , then she slowed down a bit but wasn’t sympathetic to my pain at all. I’ve been teary ever since and will not have it again
