Traumatic colonoscopy

I am so glad I found this forum as it has made me feel not a complete idiot. This morning I had a colonoscopy for suspected diverticulitis. I was given fentanyl 50mcg& midazolam 2mg ( sedation & pain relief).i am 60 and hv had various procedures thro the years but hv never experienced pain like it .. they only managed a third of the way into the colon and I had to get them to stop. It was utter agony and I was even screaming. like previous  posts I am not a wimp (having suffered severe endometriosis and getting hysterectomy and ovaries removed at 29 .) I used to pass out with the pain so I feel I hv a fairly high pain threshold now. I really think the procedure needs to be looked at and the sedation and pain relief reviewed , as like many have said it did nothing at all for me . I ended up in tears which is not like me and will certainly not be having another colonoscopy. I feel actually traumatised by the whole thing,,, which is just not me . I am very much a “ get on with it & stop complaining “ person. Thank you to all who hv shared there similar posts on this procedure as you hv made me feel less emotional and embarrassed due to the fact I couldn’t continue. The nurses were lovely but no one said that this had happened before making me feel rather pathetic at not carrying on with it.

  • I had a colonoscopy today. I found it so traumatic. I was crying during procedure. The doctor said that I didn't need a sedative and said she would be doing the procedure and if I wasnt OK during the procedure she would stop. It was the worst experience of my life. I like you had alot of procedures throughout the years removal of ovaries when I was 30. I also have chronic endometriosis. I also feel that I have a high pain threshold. I experienced exactly the same as u n I also felt like a fool as I have heard from so many people that there's nothing to it. I honestly believe I wasn't given anything for pain because I was in severe pain the whole way through the procedure... A nightmare!!!! And I wasn't one bit drowsy!!!! awake through out the procedure. I feel quite annoyed to night!!do they not knock u out any more. NEVER AGAIN!!!

  • Hi all of you, I totally agree with all you have said and I had less pain from a full hysterectomy than this procedure.  I really feel it needs looking at and pain relief should be optional, the second time they gave me nothing again and I made them stop as the pain was unbelievable.  So I refused the third one and they offered me a scan with a dye injection which took fifteen minutes, was pain free and such a relief.  I truly think people would rather die than go through this again.  But it seems its the standard way and you feel such a cry baby because they tell you it's simple, fairly painless and over soon, it's a no to all three from my point of view.  Hope you all recover from the trauma soon.  Hugs your way, Carol x
