Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi

initially change in bowel habits from only going once a week to going every day , This started at Xmas .  Then pain after toilet , stinging , burning , pink blood sometimes after toilet .  Have seen blood on pooh few times too.  Last 6 weeks feel sick a lot and no appetite, don't know if it's anxiety or illness .  *** off as first went in January to see gp .
    when was your consultation ?

  • Hi Sabr

My GP told me not to have it. To hold out for a colonoscopy but it became obvious that I would not get a colonoscopy on the NHS. I tried to get a private colonoscopy but I couldn’t even get it privately despite trying virtually every private hospital in the country. The NHS took control of all the private hospitals on the 15th April. One consultant I spoke to, a professor, suggested a CT scan and told me they detect 85% of all cancers. it’s not a 100% test. The CT I had put an intravenous with a dye through my body.

I would ask your GP why he thinks you shouldn’t have one. My GP only thought I shouldn’t have the CT scan as he initially thought that with an urgent referral I would have gotten a colonoscopy but when it became obvious I wasn’t, he agreed i should have the scan and then a colonoscopy later if necessary.xx

  • [@Kadash]‍ ‍ so you’ve managed to get a CT scan, that’s good ! How did that go? Hope all was well.

I don’t know why he said he wouldn’t advice me to have one. If they can do CT scans why can’t they do colonoscopy I don’t understand.

[@Claireg73]‍ that sounds like a fissure or hemorrhoid. Burning and stinging is usually associated with that. I think what worries me isn’t having painless bleeding

  • Sabr that's what i

hoping for a fissure , I get like a toothache type pain after BM.  What are your symptoms .  Are there no colonoscopy procedures taking place ?  I mean I'm sure CT would detect anything obvious and symptomatic .   I'm feeling so crap but don't know whether it's a mix of anxiety .  However since they said I have low iron I'm thinking maybe this is making me feel worse .  I tend to always look at worst case scenario , when is your next appt?
    claire x

  • Hi

    have you had a CT?

    thanks

  • [@Claireg73]‍ Well my concern is bleeding everyday, and from what I know that is not normal, I’ll bleed without pain which is also not normal. So mentally I’m not doing so good. Aniexty level is a 100 at the moment. They won’t do any colonoscopys/ sigmoidoscopy because of covid risk so I don’t know how long I’ll be waiting.

What have your doctors said to you ? Are you gonna get colonoscopy done?

  • My anxiety is not good , feel so like alone even though I have people around me .  My consultation is Wednesday .  Have you had your iron checked ? My mum had bleeding every day I thought the worse it ended up a fibroid and polyps she was bleeding from front and back and was 65 at time and she had all tests and is fine

    thanks

  • Hey [@Claireg73]‍ I last got my iron checked in December, which was normal, but can’t be sure how it is right now. Every morning I wake up with this dreading feeling because I hate going to loo. My stool is looking rather thin too. So my anxiety is all over the place. Do let me know how your consultantation goes.

  • I know how you feel

its just hideous , I just wished I pushed a bit harder but I can't think like that as just need to deal with whatever it may be .  I have turned into a complete weirdo who checks pooh every day .  Have noticed I'm starting to go every other day rather than every day and also my stool is firming up and less loose and colour looks a bit more normal , more brown than yellow , green, orange tinge . It's just all too much .  I have started medication as anxiety through roof .  Take care

  • Hi Sabr

i think they are doing CT scans because they are non invasive. Whereas with the colonoscopy they stick something into you up your bum which means that covid can get into your body up your bum. At least that’s what they implied to me which seems strange because I had a needle put into my arm when I had the CT scan so would it not be possible for covid to get into your body through a needle; I don’t know but that’s going into your body too so I would think so.

If you have a scan you need to ask for the PET CT scan, it’s a combined CT and PET CT scan. I’m not sure which I had because I was just so relieved to be having something I just grabbed the appointment. I am going to check today which I had.

I have started to bury my head in the sand and not think about things. It scares me if I do especially at night when I go to bed because I can’t help but think about things and now I’m having horrendous dreams and a terrible dread when I wake up; It’s frightening. BTW I have to agree with Claire. If you have burning and stinging it could be heamoroids.x

update: I’ve just checked and I had a CT scan not the PET CT scan. My result has come back as noth8ng abnormal discover which I’m obviously very pleased about. But it still doesn’t make sense. I still have a high FIT test reading so where is the blood coming from! I’m quite worried now that I know it’s the CT scan because I know that it’s not the gold star scan. I feel like they’ve given me the scan and now they just want to wash their hands of me.
