Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • [@Kadash]‍ hope your ct scan went well. Yeh I think that’s why they’re not doing sigmoidoscopys.

I have pain less bleeding, and small parts of my stools are red which is scary.

[@Claireg73]‍ looks like your bowl movements are going back to normal, that’s good. I do think your bleeding is being caused by hemorrhoids and fissure hence the burning and stinging.

  • Great news that ct was fine , I would give anything for that reassurance .  CT is good at picking up cancer , I would try and relax now,  there could be lots of reasons for bleeding that does not point to cancer .  I had cancer 13 years ago my worry is it had come back , I have health anxiety too.  I honestly think you have got good result and if still no convinced take the reassurance until this is all over and then get a colonoscopy for that extra price of mind .  You must of had contrast too with CT as you mentioned a needle in arm, contrast makes it a much more detailed picture they are able to see more vascular details .  Try and relax , I really hope I get  CT and a result like yours .

  • Sorry meant to ask how did you get results back ? And have you had any other symptoms ?

  • Hi

Sabr have you been offered CT, apparently higher up piles can cause bleeding and no symptoms .  I'm on a ibs group and they have talked about them on that .  That is what you could have .

  • [@Claireg73]‍ hey Claire I don’t have ibs but I do know I have hemorrhoids, but I never thought hemorrhoids could cause daily bleeding, never heard it it could either. The consultant said a ct scan be done but he advised me not to and just wait for the sigmoidoscopy.

Really happy that you have been cancer free for 13 years !!! Don’t worry too much, your bleeding isn’t everyday is it ? And it’s accompanied by burning and stinging does sound like a cause of chronic fissure or hemorrhoid.

  • Hi

spoke with consultant he is booking CT scan.  My ferritin levels are 7 so wonder I'm tired out.  I'm happy with a CT as it will show anything significant and hopefully won't show anything and if that's the case I can breathe and relax a bit .  How are you today ?

  • Hi Claire. 13years cancer free is brilliant. You sound similar to me with anxiety and I think that can make everything worse even if there is really nothing even there....but we have it drummed into us to get things checked out (usually, before the covid virus took over) so the CT scan will put your mind at rest. When is it btw, was it today Wednesday. I’m totally rubbish on medical things. What is ferritin.

I’ll fill you in on my symptoms.

Happy and healthy until 3 yrs ago. Bullying in the workplace started and so did my diarrhoea which never went away and just became normality for me with harder b/m being unusual. Slight tummy discomfort and swelling of my tummy has lately turned to pain at a threshold of 10 and had me crying out. Several visits to the GP over 3 yrs and have Been told it’s IBS. Finally gave up on going to the GPS and accepted that was how my body was going work from now on. I’ve been described as super active, not so anymore. Fastforward 3 years and Its all the energy I can muster to make my bed. I’m knackered in short. Pain in the left groin is almost permenant and ranges between a 6-10. The pain within a radius of 6 inch of my belly button encompassing the whole of my tummy makes my tummy tender and feel raw inside. It sounds silly but there is a strange pain it’s like someone is trying to break my waters when your ere pregnant. My bowel movements are yellow and raggedy. I can open my bowel 12 times a day. My appetite is starting to wain as for the past cou0le of days I’ve started to feel sick after eating. My bottom feels like someone is pushing a fist up it, I cant even touch my tummy sometimes and have ordered 2 maternity dresses as I cant get into any of my clothes without pain. My fit test has come back with a high reading. My blood tests have all been normal.

What symtoms do you have now. The thing is you just don’t know what’s caused through anxiety and what’s a real problem. My friend said that they had heard the government is hoping to start colonoscopies In about 2 months. I think it’s best to have a scan and like you say follow with a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy.  What kind of cancer did you have before.  You are bound to more anxious than most but it doesn’t mean there is anything untoward. You know the symtoms so maybe (no disrespect) unwittingly your mind having already got that knowledge may have magnified some smaller things that if you didn’t have that knowledge you might have not even noticed if you know what I mean. Btw i got my results for the scan from my GP; my friend has been ringing the practice constantly for the results.

Fingers crossed your results will be good and help you to relax too.xx

    [@Sabr]‍

Hi Are you still giving the scan a miss and waiting for the colonoscopy? It might put your mind at rest if you have one. It hasn’t put my mind completely at rest but it has a bit and at least I can take medicine that might be bad for someone with certain problems which have now been more or less been ruled out.

I like Claire’s suggestion of having the endoscopy too but for now trying to relax with the knowledge that I have from the scan.xx

  • [@Kadash]‍ I’m having an ultrasound on my abdomen next week, so let’s see. Hoping for a sigmoidoscopy after this and soon hopefully after this covid thing blows off. Glad you and Claire can atleast give your mind a little peace with the ct scan for the timebeing. Do keep us updated. Sending you both lots of positivity and love. Xx

  • Hopefully when you’ve had your ultrasound that will help put your mind at rest until your Sigmoidoscopy and fingers crossed that won’t be to long either now. I know it’s difficult but try to relax now; you’re ultrasound is all booked in. Wishing you well and let us know how your ultrasound goes.xx

  • Had my CT scan,

When in the hospital, they told me the scan will show 90%

My scan came back clear.... but that has left me feeling the same as futher investigation is needed which I can't get as due to the current situation eith covid19, every pain, bloating, feeling is causing me severe anxiety.
