Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Oh [@Sha007]‍ :-( I'm so sorry to hear that you still don't have a date for your CT colon. That is such a long time to be waiting now with no answers or even a date set.

I don't know what to suggest apart from being very stern at your appointment next week and requesting a CT colon ASAP due to how long you've already waited and the distress it's causing you.

  • I hope it went all went okay and you're recovering well from the procedure. Take care of yourself x

  • Hi All,

I had a Positive FIT test result yesterday 59.2ug/g. Doctor called to say they have booked me an emergency colonoscopy due to having other symptoms. I had pain start after eating, right side upper abdomin around 6 weeks ago. Since then the pain radiates all over my stomach and i have had a change in stool colour (slightly lighter) not red or dark and doesn't seem like i am completely empty when i go. A week ago i lost control of my bowel completely but there was no blood. Since then the pains in my abdomin have increased. I cannot visibly see any blood in the stool or the sample i sent but also my Faecal calprotecting level is above normal at 69mg/kg. I have health anxiety and am absolutely petrified.

  • Hi Hun. I’m sorry you are In such a lot of pain as well as having to wait for the appointment. It’s the waiting that gets to you. Everyone seems to have different and yet similar symptoms and that’s what makes it so frustrating because there’s is no set pattern to a good outcome but reassuringly the statistics show that most ppl have nothing sinister. I hope you get your appointment through soon.x

  • Hope everything has gone okay with a positive outcome hun.x

  • Hey Hun. Sorry it’s just a follow up appointment. Don’t make the mistake I did. I played things down a bit when I had my telephone consultation (not wanting to be a pain in the butt during covid) but you must shout up or else you won’t get seen for the CT. I had a friend who stepped in because I was in agony and they chased my appointment up. The medics didn’t think there was anything wrong; just stress. Well they were shocked when they did the colonoscopy and they did sort me out. They sent me to another hospital who were still doing the procedure so I am very, very grateful to them because they risked their lives to operate on me during high covid. Take a friend along to shout up for you in a polite way. I agree with you regarding the private hospitals. Some are taking on the NHS patients to clear backlogs but it all depends where you live. Good luck with the consultation Hun and shout up and make sure you get that CT!x

  • Hi [@BB76]‍ .

sorry to hear about your FIT result and that you're in so much pain. I hope you get your appointment through soon. I think it really does depend on where you are in the country as to how long you have to wait for the colonoscopy. But I had my telephone appointment with nurse on Monday, and I'm booked in for colonoscopy next Friday so the wait isn't always too long.

I've been keeping a log of symptoms and recording my diet too. Might not be of use to the consultant but at least I feel like I'm doing something and collecting as much info that might help.

  • Hi AnonLF,

The Hospital called me on Friday after the results on Thursday and scheduled an appointment for Monday to arrange a date. It's all moved very quickly and cannot praise them enough. My GP has been fantastic and has moved very quickly to help with my anxiety and he even said to call if I needed to chat and discuss anything which I thought was amazing considering the pressures they are under at the moment.

I'll have you in my thoughts and my fingers crossed for your procedure on Friday and really hope it's nothing too serious.

I am so glad I found this forum, it really has been helpful.

Take care everyone and thank you to all that responded, you will never know what it has done to help my head.

  • Hi [@BB76]‍,

Thank you for your well wishes.

that's such good news about your appointments.Really pleased that you have got your initial appointment booked in. Fingers crossed you will be able to look back on this in a few weeks time as just a scare, or at least something that is relatively easily treatable. Your GP sounds fab too ️

all you can do is try to relax and take care of yourself in the meantime, which I know is easier said than done. I'm starting my bowel prep for my colonoscopy today. 5 days of low fibre food after I had been actively increasing my fibre for the past few weeks  ah well!

  • I'm on bowel prep too for the scope on Tuesday. Chicken and white bread for me today, when I'm used to high fibre and lots of fruit and veg. 48 hours from now and I'll have my result. After the initial shock, I'm feelin go a bit more positive.
