Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hello, Thanks for the support. Yesterday Finally received appointment letter for 19/May/2021.

    TAHNK YOU

  • Hi everyone,

first time posting to this group. Already the messages have helped tremendously. I hope everyone is keeping as well as they can.

I went to my GP 2 weeks ago following bright red blood in stools/ drops in toilet bowl. No other symptoms. GP found small lump during examination so was referred to hospital for bowel cancer investigation. Bloods came back normal. FIT test is 86. im 32, female and have family history of bowel cancer (maternal grandmother died of primary bowel cancer).

had call with hospital this morning and I am being referred for colonoscopy. They couldn't advise on timescales other than I would hear more in 3 weeks time.

just wondering how long others have had to wait for colonoscopy at the moment? I'm worried that if it takes 3 weeks just for them to book me in, who knows how much longer I will be waiting for the colonoscopy and then any potential treatment.

  • Hi Hun. I’ve been through the abnormal fit test experience. Its hard because it’s all you can think about. The only thing that helped me, and it’s easier said than done, was to try to push those thoughts right out of your mind when you start thinking about them and make yourself think of something else positive or do something, anything that will occupy the time you have...Netflix, anything. I had panick attacks and they were getting out of control so it was the only way I could stop them. I would chat or go on this site if I needed support and then when I’d finished chatting, I would not allow my mind to wonder back to that subject and it was difficult but I had to try really hard because I was making myself even more ill. It was found that I had a very large polyp. It was 9.5 cm (a large one is considered around 1-2cm so it was quite large) but  (touch wood) I am okay. It was tested and it was not bad. It was removed almost a year ago now.  I still have some bowel problems like going to the loo quite a lot of times, but I’m on a high fibre diet and still sorting out which foods I can or cannot eat without making my tummy upset. I consider myself very, very lucky. But remember, many people have a high fit test and everything is okay. My GP told me you can have a high test from bleeding gums if you swallow blood when you clean your teeth, or piles that are high up your bum so try not to worry (I know you still will), but everyone is here to offer support. I found this site invaluable.x

  • HI,

My CT colon date is exact 4 months from my visit to Gastrologist. But don’t worry my case looks to one off. Some clerical error (I assume).

    Keep checking

    Good Luck

  • Thank you [@Kadash]‍ . I am so pleased for you that the polyp was removed and you are now on the mend, you must be so relieved. I am definitely trying to focus on other things, I really enjoy crocheting and gardening which are really helping to push the worries away when they pop back in my head. Statistically I know I will be okay, but just applying that logic when you are in a tizz is easier said than done! X

  • Hi [@Sha007]‍ . I'm sorry to hear that you've had to wait so long for an appointment. It must have been such a worrying time for you? How are you doing with it all? I hope your CT colon goes okay and you find out what the cause of your symptoms are x

  • Hi,

Spoke too soon. appointment letter I received for 19/may is only for follow-up appointment with same Consultant.

No date for Actual CT Colon appointment.

Why NHS cannot refer its some patients to private clinics and clear the backlog.

Sorry for being negative.  I am very disappointed. Looking for other options now.

    Please suggest.

  • I got referred on 19/20 April and as I type this, am sitting in hospital gown, waiting to be carted to the colonoscopy room. I cad CA19-9 and CEA tests done and they came back ok. Let's see how this goes. I will keep this group posted. It is a really helpful group.

I think the delays are a function of council you are in - I would keep calling GP and the emergency dial in numbers that your prescription has. Be polite - they are extremely polite back.

  • Hey, thank you so much for your reply. Sorry about your polyp but so glad it was nothing sinister. I'm the exact same as you- it's all I can think of and then the anxiety makes my bowel problems worse! It's so unhelpful isn't it. Feeling better this week as have normal Calprotectin and blood work. However, getting referred for colonoscopy as my stools are really soft, I'm going a lot and there's still blood and mucus. Better to be safe than sorry. But thank you for the tips, will defo try and get on top of the worry as it's making life really difficult! Glad you're ok xx
