Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi. I didn’t have anything like that but it’s all so worrying. It’s the wait. You just think all sorts.. At least after the consultation you will have a better idea with what’s going on. It’s nice that you have your wife to talk to about it. Good luck with your consultation tomorrow hun.x

  • Hello Kadash,

So I'm pleased to report its nothing serious, but I feel disappointed in the result in that I have many more unanswered questions than I have answered ones.

They told me I have one haemorrhoid. Which I don't doubt can be bad and painful and certainly has been the cause of blood loss... but I'm just so unsure it would cause all of the other symptoms I've been having for near enough a year.

The test literally took under 10 minutes. They were in and out, chatting all the way through it. Maybe my colon was just perfect but it just felt so rushed. I watched procedures on YouTube beforehand so I knew what to expect and they all take time to make sure they check every part. I just didn't get that feeling.

Haemorrhoids doesn't explain me having to be hospitalised for five days because of severe abdominal pain (fixed for the most part with morphine!) Haemorrhoids doesn't explain the sudden urgency to need the loo less than ten minutes after a meal with sharp pains and consistently having diarrhoea, or that pre gallbladder removal I had perfectly healthy normal bowel movements.

Surely the haemorrhoids would have been picked up in the initial rectal exam done in the hospital?

Honestly I don't know how to feel. Relieved but unsatisfied, feeling like it doesn't explain everything.

I'm very glad I have a private follow-up consult through bupa (and my work) on 13th April to chat through my concerns, as the NHS nurse told me today I wouldn't need any more follow up and that was me, and to speak to my pharmacist if I needed a cream.

Perhaps I'm just being a hypochondriac???

  • Hi Epode..not sure of your history or other symptoms but just jumping on here to make sure you are checked for endometriosis.  On average it takes women 8 years to get diagnosed, often missed by so many medical professionals.  The symptoms are very varied, you can check them out if you haven't im sure, but insist on an mri if you've not had one and an mri of your pelvis, abdomen ..I have stage 4 endometriosis..I had ultra sounds all clear.  Vaginal cameea examination. All clear . Mri of abdomen. All clear.  Mri of peliva showed it up everywhere.  That took 8 years. I am very lucky with my symptoms but many women have horrendous amounts that are atreibbuted o other things..it also would never be picked up in a colonscopy.  Good luck.

  • Hello,

I am 50 and had positive Fit test in Jan 2021. Urgent referral same time and in next few days had initial check and Doctor said Team will contact me in 2 weeks (Colonoscopy suggested).  Its 12 weeks now and had no contact from NHS about colonoscopy. I called twice GP and he promised to contact me back but no luck.

Can someone please confirm facing long delays in these days.

I am worried as losing weight.

  • Hi Epode

...absolutely not....you are not being a hypochondriac.

Firstly congratulations on having a good result. That’s something to be soooo relieved over but I absolutely know what you mean about your unanswered questions. I had a similar experience once my polyp was removed.Everything was great for the first couple of months and then my problems started again but I was told it was irritable bowel and I knew that wasn’t right but the questions I needed answered were just brushed aside and it just didn’t sit well. But my friend pushed to be seen again and I had xrays and scans. Then the X-ray and scans showed that there was faecial backup so now I am on a high fibre diet which I wouldn’t have know about if my friend hadn’t been persistent . You know your own body but hopefully whatever it Is it will just be something that although causing you problems isn’t a major serious life threatening illness.x

  • Hi

whatis endeometris. I’ve heard of it but don’t know what it is. I’m a bit rubbish with body and illnesses.

  • Hi@sha007

Dont bother ringing your GP. Telephone the referral/booking suite at the hospital to which you have been referred and ask them if they have received the referral. From there you can ask how urgent your referral has been graded and how long down the waiting list you are. If they haven’t received it get onto your GP and make sure you speak to the GP who referred you or a senior GP and ask for a rereferral marked urgent because of the delay you’ve already had. Most referrals are sent electronically so they should receive them more or less straight away and they are put on the hospital system even if an appointment is not yet allocated. My friend was alledgedly referred by her GP when in actual fact he had forgot to send the referral. It happens. Good luck.

  • THANK YOU. I have limited experience with NHS procedures. I wish the same information was given to me when called GP.

Anyway, I have tried calling referral/booking suite but no answer. I will keep trying Thank you again.

  • Guess what, you are right again.

Called department do check the referral. NO record of referral. They have record about my initial visit. It looks Doctor who checked initially 12 weeks ago has not done referral to CT Colon deparment. Lady who answer my call said, she will contact the doctor (remind doctor).

Very disappointed. I lost 12 week time. :(

  • ...just check again though in a few days. Everything is electronically sent so 5 days or less and they should have received it but don’t rely on the lady who answered the call to telephone the GP. I’d ring the GP myself too. You have to make sure that your referral definitely gets sent through this time and it could go astray or not be sent a second time. Good luck Hun.x
