Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • I'm also waiting for my FIT results im so anxious I don't think I did the test properly I reopened it after putting the sample

  • Hey I was wondering if someone cud plz help me out .. I don't know how to use this device properly... • This whole thread has been so helpful to me. I just got a positive FIT test back and am incredibly anxious (I'm a worrier at the best of times!), and it has been so good to see all these other posts and not feel so alone. Now I've got to wait for up to 2 weeks for the colonoscopy, and that seems like a long time. I can't believe so many had to wait so much longer while COVID shut everything down - it would have driven me mad. Thank you, everyone, for discussing your experiences.

  • Hello everyone I'm Nikki - first time posting here. I have a colonoscopy scheduled for Sunday (two days time) and quite nervous.

Background: Had my gallbladder removed last January when my son was three months old due to severe upper abdominal pain spasms throughout and after pregnancy. Since then I've had nothing but issues with my bowel movements: symptoms include pain immediately after eating (anything) having to go urgently, always having loose stools more often than not, needing to go like 4-5-6 times per day and occasionally blood in my stool. Other than that I feel well in myself. I have had these symptoms for over a year and haven't told anyone because the surgeon who did my gall bladder removal said loose bowel movements were normal.

Two weeks ago I got admitted to hospital for four days because of a severe pain in my tummy just around my bellybutton. They tested my bloods and they were normal, did an ultrasound and vaginal thingy or other and all good. They did a qfit test in hospital on the saturday (abnormally i hadn't been able to go since the pain started on the monday) and said they would refer me for a sigmoidoscopy if qfit negative or full colonoscopy if postive (if blood found). They also said due to pandemic there was a long wait. Just a week later I got a call to tell me my full colonoscopy was booked for this sunday. So obviously i know they found blood which was expected cause I could see there was blood in my stool in the hospital.

So I was nervous anyway about sunday, but I just got my copy of my hospital discharge letter through written to my GP and it states that my Qfit returned a result of >400.

I've read this whole thread and haven't seen a post from anyone with a result of >400 - so naturally I am now in FULL PANIC MODE. I am only 32 and just had my first baby. I shouldn't think the worst. But i am. So yeah, don't really know what the point of this is other than to say... Hi and I'm scared.

  • I'm still learning about FIT scores, but as far as I can tell all it means is the amount of blood in the stool, and not really anything about the specific reason for that blood. So, you could have a really high score as a symptom of something that's actually not that scary when you know what it is.

I can't say "Don't worry". I'm really scared right now, and... yeah, it's scary. Please, just try not to focus on the number. I'm sure I saw someone earlier in the thread who had a score around 1000. Focus on getting through to Sunday and I'm really hoping they'll tell you something much less stressful than you're fearing. Best of luck.

  • Unsure what to think myself, had real heavy bleeding for 2 days. Then 2 weeks of a constant weep. Started jan 21, Big change in bowel movement and pain in my midriff. Lots of really smelly wind now also. Pain after food. Passing normal to liquid stools.

on day 2 of bleeding I got a gp appointment, she did a check, no tears or hemiriods she could feel. Gave me steroid sups to take for a week, see if it would settle. Week later still weeping. I phoned. She put an urgent request through to hospital. 6 and a bit weeks, last week I got a fit test. Handed into GPs 16th March, got a letter from hospital on wed just gone 24th March.

A consultant is phoning me Monday 29th March at 1030. Not told anyone, only my wife. Slightly worried. I had to ring hospital to confirm my best number. The girl just said it was to discuss the test results.

  • Good luck - I've got my consultant conversation on Tuesday 30th (some time in the afternoon, no specific time). Apparently they won't go straight to a colonoscopy without some consultation first - probably to ask most of the questions the GP already asked! *sigh*

I've only spoken to my wife and sister about it. It feels really hard to talk about it when so much is up in the air, but just saying something seems to help.

As I said before, best of luck.

  • hi Hun how are you. Have you had your results. I know it’s such a stressful time waiting. I was waiting around for over 4 months as it was a year ago and covid had just closed everything down. It’s the waiting because your imagination can run wild but you have to stay focussed oin something else that is positive and if your mind wanders back to your lumps, make your mind go back to a positive thing in your life. I know it’s  easier said than done though. These lumps may be harmless cists. Anyway hun, let me know how you got on  and keep safe.x

  • Hi Hun. How did your colonoscopy go. I had a positive fit test a year ago and it was quite a journey. I know it’s mega  stressful and scary so I hope you are okay. I had a high FIT test at 200....they can go up to 1000. I had a 10cm polyp which is pretty big so I had to have a specialist surgeon remove it....so please stay positive. Now you have had the colonoscopy you are on the right path to knowing and dealing with whatever is found, a polyp or haemorrhoids or anything else. Routing for you and keeping my fingers crossed for you.x

  • Hi. You’re totally right with the fit test. You could for example have a tooth that is bleeding when you clean your teeth and if you swallow some blood, end up with a positive fit test. It’s so difficult not to feel scared though. I’ve been there and know. The mind plays havoc. Hope your consultation goes well.x
