Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • In no time everything will be ok god willing. Try not worry. Yes I’m due end of this month. Scared as I’m a first time mum.

  • Hi Hun.

How are you; silly question, worried I imagine. It’s not going to be long now though hun. I haven’t been online; well I’ve not posted...I’ve had some sad personal things to deal with (tell you another time) and I’ve just been quite emotional and very, very flat. You only have like 2 weeks or so now hun and hopefully Xmas is going to keep your mind busy. I know you have such a lot on your mind, both excitement with the birth and worry over your health and I’m hoping wee baby comes a little early but obviously completely healthy, and you can heal quickly and then be seen at the hospital quicker and go into the new year without all this worry. Keep us all updated. I might not have felt able to post Hun, but I’m still popping on for updates to check on you. Big hugs hun. Stay safe.xx

  • I've been reading through all of your posts on this thread and am so glad to find a community of people with similar symptoms to myself. I've had IBS since I was 12, and years of diverticulitis too. I've been in and out of hospital with massive flares that needed antibiotics and I'm just getting fed up of the constant pain and inability to eat properly.  Sometimes the pain is breathtakingly severe. My GP took a stool sample tests and bloods last week. FIT shows 'mildly positive for foecal blood' and she's referring me to see if I can have a colonoscopy. I last had one about 7 years ago and they removed a polyp and remarked on general inflammation.  And that was it. I had breast cancer 12 years ago so I'm just a wee bit worried. Not sure what I'm looking for here. Just some understanding, I suppose. You all see very nice, and empathetic!

  • Hi Hun. This site has been a godsend for me; it’s been great to off load those feelings that you might not want to share face to face. I haven’t been on here for a while but I’m still checking in to root for a lovely lady (Sabr) who has helped me with kind words of support whilst I was going through this.

I can understand you being worried given what you’ve already been through but this is a different problem. I feel for you, it must be really awful not being able to eat what you want. I’m finding that almost everything I eat irritates my stomach, even the foods that are supposedly good for you.  Lot s of us on here have had fit tests with varying results, and varying diagnoses.  My GP told me you can even be positive if you have a mouth ulcer or teeth that’s bled before the test .x

  • Hi Sabr

    i hope You are well

Has your little one arrived ?

  • Hi Sabr,

How are you. You must have the wee one by now. I imagine you’ll be very busy and wrapped up with the new bundle. I’m hoping by some miracle the bleeding has stopped for you. You mustn’t forget to look after yourself too Hun so make sure the doctors focus on you now. Hope to hear from you soon.xx
