Loose stools for months now blood

 Hi all,

I'm 21 and a little worried. I cant remember the last time I opened my bowels and it was solid. I have had loose stools for about 6-7 months. And today I had bright red blood in my stool. I feel tired most of the time and often feel nauseous (ruled out being pregnant already).

Anyone had anything similar.

Thanks

  • Hi Ellie

You need to go to see your doctor. You need this checking out.If you are tired you could be anaemic and if you have been losing blood for a while without noticing, this could explain this.

Blood always needs checking out. I've had bowel cancer and you need to rule this out, you will worry yourself sick if you don't sort it.

There are other things like IBS although not sure you would bleed with this, piles. inflammation of the bowel etc.

Let me know how you go.

  • Hi I have this on a regular basis it happens very frequent for me and I have a hereditary gene called lynch syndrome and basically this can cause bowel cancer at any point in my life. I have been to the doctors about having blood in my stool and they said it could be a strain or a split in my bum basically... I know gross but hey ho so maybe going to the doctors just to see if everything’s working down there properly might be a good option chick x

  • Hi

Are you screened with having Lynch syndrome?

Like colonoscopies every so often. I think your GP should take this more seriously with you being more at risk.

Better to be one step ahead when cancer is involved. Sometimes you have to push with GP's. My cancer was missed for 18 months and GP's put it down as IBS, you know your body and when something isn't right you have to keep pestering until the reason is identified.

  • yeah I am screened with lynch syndrome and I have had colonoscopy before but it came up that I was all clear. I have had problems my whole life with my bowel. I feel like I’ve come to a standstill really with my issues because I’m not sure what else there is for me to do

  • Hi Ellie98. Welcome to the forum.

I am not a doctor, but I have suffered from bowel problems most of my adult life.

At 21, bowel cancer is very very unlikely, unless you have some genetic predisposition.

However, you are about the age when my bowel problems started, which were eventually pinned down to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  You don't normally pass blood with IBS, but repeated straining and bottom wiping can cause bleeding piles, and it is possible for that to be the cause of the blood that you saw.

If it is IBS, then it's not fatal, but it is really annoying.  After suffering for many years, I eventually found that a couple of my favourite foods were triggering my condition. After cutting them out, I'm much better, although I get the odd flare up.

IBS is not something you can and should diagnose yourself.  You need to see your GP who will conduct appropriate tests and make a diagnosis.  If it is IBS, then you might find tablets will help for a while, possibly assisted by bulking agents such as Fybogel, and soothers such as Aloe Vera Juice.  But please don't try treating yourself without seeing your GP first.

So, please see your GP.  Say that this has been going on for months and (importantly) that you've seen blood.  Also say that it's making your life a misery.
