Breast clinic yesterday - not getting good vibes

I had my appointment at the breast care clinic yesterday. The doctor found three lumps by ultrasound, and I had mammograms which showed some calcification. I then had core biopsies of each lump, and I have to go back to have more biopsies of the calcification. My next appointment is for results next week.

The doctor just said he had to wait for the results. He wouldn't give any indication of whether he thought the lumps were cancer or benign.

I'm not feeling positive about it though. Seems to me like everything is pointing to bad news next week. It seemed yesterday that the nurse was expecting me to be given bad news - I was there by myself and she was asking about how I would get home, if I had driven, saying I could wait for my taxi in the clinic. I wonder if the doctor didn't say anything because I was there alone??? Trying not to overthink it, but obviously I am very worried.

  • I definitely think your over thinking this, which is totally understandable as I'm prone to this too (a lot)!

The best advice I got on here from a lovely lady was it isn't anything until it's something.....somehow that helped me...

Also I feel it's good to prepare for the worse and hope for the best.....it's all up in the air at the moment and your second guessing everything (naturally)

im going to try and tag a couple of ladies who helped me .... [@Jolamine][@Chriss]‍

there were many others but the names escape me now ( chemo brain) lol

try and take it easy love, you'll soon know what's what x

  • Thanks - it feels like a long wait but I know in the grand scheme of things it isn't. The doctor didn't tell me, but the paperwork I had to return to the receptionist said one of the biopsies was of my lymph node. By the time I saw that I was out of the consulting room and the clinic was closing. I just wish the doctor had explained to me rather than leaving me in the dark - even just to say it could be a, b, or c.

  • Sentinel node biopsy is routine, so don't be worrying about that. I personally feel it's a good thing the consultant didn't commit, my consultant told me my lump was a fibroadenoma and absolutely nothing to worry about....you can guess the rest! Talk about floored....

The waiting game screws with your stress levels, you have time to conjure up all kinds of horrible stuff....

try and busy yourself....anything....work? Walk? Kids? Dogs? I know it will remain in the back of your head whatever your doing...but keep the body moving....lift the energies up a bit....it will help...I promise xxx

  • Ha yes 2 kids - 9 months and 2 ½ so I'm always busy!

I'm glad you said it's routine. Just would have been nice to have that explained at the time. I presume that one of the lumps he found is in my lymph node because he said he found 3 lumps and he did 3 biopsies, the last of which was under my armpit, and then the paperwork said lymph node biopsy. Feel like I've had to piece things together.

Will keep busy like you say and hope the appointment for the calcification biopsies comes through soon.

    X

  • Oh boy, sounds like you have your hands full with the children....they will certainly keep you busy..lol! Let us know how you get on? Xx

    Hi Amy,

I'm so sorry to hear that your consultant doesn't seem to have explained things to you. You will be totally floored at the moment and this week will feel like forever, as you wait for your results. As Marlyn has said it is a routine procedure to do a sentinel node biopsy, so nothing to worry about.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and my consultant was pretty sure that it was cancer even before I got the results of my biopsies. I worried myself sick that week waiting for the results, only to find that he was right. Still Marlyn's suggestion of 'prepare for the worse and hope for the best', is good advice. Are you taking someone with you to your appointment next week? It is always advisable to do this. It can also be helpful to write down any questions you may have, as all sensible thought goes out the window when in the 'heat' of your consultation.

You shouldn't have any bother keeping busy with 2 young children. Not all lumps are cancerous. Out of every 8 people referred to the breast clinic, only 1 will be unlucky. I do hope that you are one of the lucky ones. It could with any luck be something related to your recent pregnancy.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi ya ...

I had 4 call backs from mamorgrams over the years that were all fine ... and last year had 2 calsification lumps to, that I had to go to theatre to have out ... and they were fine ...

So you've had lots of great advice ... and nothing will stop you worrying ... but try to remember most lumps are benign...  and with three little ones they will help keep you from panicking too much ... though it is normal as I don't know anyone who doesnt over think results ...

Fingers crossed for a good result ... Chrissie x

  • Thanks all - I really appreciate the advice and support. Will update when I have some news. X
