Nipple discharge and Lumps

Hello everyone, I’m just looking for some advice as to my situation and if anyone has had anything similar please note I am 17 years old

I noticed that around 5 weeks ago that one of my nipple had gone funny, it had changed shape started peeling and weeping discharged. I then went to my doctors who told me this was a skin infection and gave me anti biotics. After a week this continuted to get worse with it becoming painful and my nipple then sticking to my chlothing where I had to peel it off. I then went back to the doctors saying that it had gotten worse. They then put me on stronger antibiotics to clear it. It has continued to get worse for over 5 weeks with my nipple now producing discharge and blood and has a lump on the side of it. I then decided to go to A&E as my doctors were not doing anything. They then checked my breast and said I have a lump under my armpit and 2 lumps in my breast. They then booked me an emergency appointment to have a scan which didn’t happen as they couldn’t “fit me in” I then saw a breast doctor who advised that i should put cream on it and go home which I might add I have had for a week and no difference has been made. I was not happy with this so I rang my GP and got an emergency appointment for a referral , I now have an appointment with the breast clinic in which I hope to get a proper answer and put my mind at rest.

I am no doctor but if this was a skin infection it should have cleared up by now with 2 lots of anti biotics and cream and if it is anything else something needs to be done about it they can’t keep palming me off because of my age!

Thank you

  • Hello love,

im so relieved to hear you are awaiting a breast clinic appointment, I agree they can't keep fobbing you off....a scan will soon be able to tell you what's what....I'm sure you already know the odds are all in your favour....age, hormonal etc.....but until you know for absolute certainty your brain will always be wondering...

let us know how you get on ? Xx

  • Hello and thanks for posting on the forum,

I am sorry to hear about all your different side effects.  I can understand that it must have  been very distressing for you.

Unfortunately it can sometimes take a while to work out the most appropriate antibiotic to treat an infection.

As I am not looking after you and don't have access to your medical notes it is difficult to say what is causing your problems. There is some information written by Breast Cancer Care  about periductal mastitis if that is what the doctors think you may have. This is a benign (not Cancer) infection which can happen in young people.  Have a  look at the information here.

Breast cancer is very unusual in someone of your age.

I do hope that it clears up soon and that you get some reassurance from the breast clinic.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes,

    Catherine
