Scared I have bowel cancer

hello,

so my backstory is I am 28 years old (nearly 29) so fairly young and have just had a baby 9 weeks ago. During my pregnancy I was told I was anaemic and put on iron tablets and once she was born I was even more severely anaemic but not had bloods done since. Throughout the later part of my pregnancy I started opening my bowels a lot more frequently (changing from once a day or once every other day to about 2-3 times per day). I put this down to hormones and ignored it. Then a week or so ago I had a few episodes of bright red blood in my stool and the toilet water went bright red also. My partner and friend said it was probably haemorrhoids from the birth so since it only happened a few times I again stupidly ignored it. The past few days I’ve had some right sided abdominal pain. And today when I last opened my bowels there was mucus in it. Every symptom I get seems to line up with bowel cancer. I will of course be seeing my GP now ASAP. But in the meantime I’m seriously terrified. I don’t want to leave my little girl without her mum already (or ever obviously). Please distract me or put my mind at ease or tell me your stories.

Thank you

Alice

  • Hi there - sorry you're worried but I do understand why altho' there's every chance that your worries are unfounded. I recently had some symptoms, some of which were similar to yours & had tests for bowel cancer. Luckily all came back clear altho' I was absolutely terrified whilst I waited for the results. My GP told me that 9 out of 10 patients referred for these tests come back clear. You haven't even been referred for tests so I think you are getting ahead of yourself. Even if (big IF) you are referred the chances of your having it are very low.

It's sensible that you are seeing your GP but I honestly think you don't need to worry. Make your GP appt. & just keep busy until it comes & try not to think negative thoughts. Oh, and you would be very young indeed to have anything serious. Do hope all goes well. x

  • Yeah I had blood in my stool that was so bad I thought I was dying or something. But it was just bad haemorrhoids (really recommend Anusol +H suppositories!). Also you could have IBD - like Crohns or ulcerative colitis or maybe just even really bad IBS. There are so many things that could be wrong with your bowels and cancer is really low on that list, especially considering your age and gender (older males are the highest risk group for bowel cancer, I believe). Obviously, you can't exclude anything but I think you'll be okay x

  • Just to update, went to GP today. He felt my stomach and said that feels soft so fine. And did a rectal examination with his finger and also with a small scope. He said it all looks clear so no haemorrhoids or anal fissures. So now got to have tons of blood tests and stool samples and then we will go from there he said.

  • So I just rang GP for test results. The receptionist said the blood test for diabetes is no further action needed. But I need a GP appointment to discuss the rest. This can’t be a good sign as I had thyroid function, liver function, kidney tests, full blood count, inflammatory markers etc all tested and it sounds like they must all be bad, otherwise surely the receptionist would say they just need to discuss thyroid test or something.

  • Hi - I doubt that all the results must be bad & it's possible that there is something but that doesn't mean it's anything bad. It's very likely, because you are young, that it's something that is easily dealt with. I wish you could focus on the positive side of things rather than seeing negative things so that your day to day life would be easier. Even if there is something it's positive that it's been found & your GP is dealing with it. Let us know.

  • If it was something bad the GP would have phoned you up or ed you in urgently it might just be something they want to discuss with you or give you tablets for. When I had blood tests results they said I have to come In and speak to the GP and it turned out my tests for my liver was a tad high  and they would redo it in 3 months. Try not to worry your age is in your favour and theres so many things it could be crohn's, IBS, collitis maybe celiac disease or a food intolerance

  • Yes, it turned out my liver function was off too but mine was low and I’m anaemic so they’re redoing it in 2 months and want some stool samples to double check too. Thank you for your comment x

  • Hiya hope you're well. I'm having the same issues I wondered if you could let me know how it went and if you got a diagnosis please x

  • Hi, I'm okay thank you, hope you are too. Weirdly mine was all caused by gallstones, we figure the blood was probably a stone coming out and causing issues on the way out. That's why my liver function was off too. And I also suffered back pain. It got sorted when I ended up in A&E with acute pancreatitis (most painful thing ever) and they did an mri and ultrasound and found gallstones. Have had my gallbladder removed now and never been better. Hope your issues are similar or less and that it turns out to not be anything too serious for you. Xx

  • So happy it was nothing too serious! It's scary how your body can go wrong in so many different ways isn't it? I'm hoping to get to the bottom of it.. I'm only 20 so doctors aren't Concerned. I had bloods and stool test 18months ago and all clear. I overreact at every opportunity but I can't take any chances been a single mum. Thankyou so much taking the time to reply to me. Hope you have a merry Christmas! Xx
